Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #104

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

December 4, 2006

Quilting Friends,

Two big announcements:

First one: you’ve figured it out, already. Instead of sending you the entire newsletter each month, I’m going to simply send an FQN email letting you know I’ve posted another newsletter on the website, and you can click over to it.  I’m getting the distinct impression that most people aren’t getting the newsletter the old way.

Second: on January 16th, my husband, 2 kids and I plan to check out of “regular life” and take a six month odyssey around our country.  We plan to camp in our RV and to homeschool our children and to see as much of this great country as possible.  Soon, I’ll have a link on my homepage (www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com) to our web log, so you can keep track of us, if you’re interested.  I plan to continue publishing the FQN newsletter each and every month, so continue to send me your news we can ALL use.

Oh, and if you have any places we just HAVE to visit in the US, please drop me a line:

mji@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

As always, if you have email changes, let me know:subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

OPPORTUNITIES by Stacey:

I recently learned of an organization called “Sew Much Comfort” and was so immediately impressed with their work that I included general information about the organization in last month’s newsletter. The information below highlights their work and was taken directly from their website, www.sewmuchcomfort.org, which is a great place to learn more about them.

Mission Statement:
Sew Much Comfort; a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization is filling the "adaptive clothing" need for these special patients. Our mission is to design, create and deliver customized clothing for these brave troops. Adaptive clothing accommodates their medical devices and situations, provides ease of use, personal independence and minimizes the visual impact of their medical condition. The goal is to provide each soldier with an individually designed and tailored wardrobe of adaptive clothing, in order to provide them comfort and maintain their dignity, thereby facilitating the healing process.

Generosity:
This project is dependent on the generosity and skill of countless Americans who wish to show their support to the wounded soldiers who have given so much of themselves in serving this country. Please help us give these heroes a tangible symbol of our support for them in all phases of their recovery from battlefield to home.

The dedicated woman who is coordinating workshops and sewing sessions in the Central Florida area is Anne Dunson. She can be reached at dunsons@gmail.com (simply write “Sew Much Comfort” in the subject line) or by phone at (407) 295-3066,

They are currently making t-shirt & boxer kits for volunteer sewers to adapt. In addition to needing volunteers, they also need cash donations to buy Velcro, boxers, etc.

Think about ways that your quilting or sewing guild or quilt shop can lend a hand to their work. Currently, Anne has the following workshops scheduled and hopes to schedule many more with your help.

January 1, 2007, Sewing Studio Fabric Store, Maitland: She will be distributing information on the Sew Much Comfort Project and answering questions.

January 6, 2007, Apopka Quilt Company, Apopka: Adaptive Workshop open to everyone, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Anne is ready and willing to teach anyone the techniques for altering these adaptive clothing garments and looks forward to hearing from you.

Remember, opportunities come in lots of different shapes, sizes and textures so if you know of any quilt-related “opportunities” please send them to me at fqn_ops@yahoo.com so they can be shared with everyone next month.

TEXTILE TOURS IN FRANCE

Jeanne Mills and Jo Anne Parkin, who have been organizing and leading textile tours to France for 12 years, would like to tell you about the exciting itinerary for May, 2007.  We'll begin on the French Riviera, in Nice. Our visits include Renoir's studio, the Matisse Museum and chapel, Monaco, and a 1900's Greek villa. Next we travel to Provence where we'll discover its wonders from our central location in Avignon (Provencal fabric, markets, Roman architecture, Van Gogh and Cezanne country), and finally we'll arrive in Paris for more interesting visits (the Orsay museum, Palace of Versailles, Toile de Jouy museum, a visit to the fabric district).

We invite you to come on this exciting tour of France!  We open the doors to places you’ve heard of and dreamt about. The focus is on both textiles and inspiration, and the days are filled with sights and activities that are wide and varied.
