Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #108

Quilting Friends,

Having just spent the weekend in San Francisco and Napa Valley, I can tell you this: quilt motifs, designs and creative inspirations can come from just about anywhere.  The tile floor of a castle, the outlines of a house, the layered colors in a landscape….well, you probably know that as well as I.  My problem is that I forget that inspiration about as quickly as I GET the inspiration.  So the digital camera really comes in handy here, and then I have to remember to put the pictures in my “quilt inspirations” folder on the laptop, subdivided into “landscape ideas”, “hexagon ideas”, “tessellations”, “color combos”, etc.

I hope you are able to get out and get some of your own inspiration as often as possible.  Even if you don’t actually use most of those ideas directly in a quilt, the creative concepts are nestling into your brain and coming out in other ways that will surprise you.

We head out this morning for Yosemite, and we keep our fingers crossed that we won’t freeze our bunnies off.  As long as we can run the camper’s electric heat to take 10 degrees off the top, we should be OK.  Then it is on to King’s Canyon, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon.

Talk to you in a month!

You may remember that I’ve listed a couple of longarm machines for sale in the past.  Well, they were sold so quickly from those listings, that I’ve decided to include a regular Classified Section in this newsletter.  If you have something sewing or quilt related to sell, consider an advertisement in this newsletter.  There are over 1000 interested readers in Florida and beyond.  The charge is $50 for your ad, which will include two listings (two consecutive newsletters) for a single ad.  Please send your ad to ad@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com, and look for a reply from me with instructions for sending the payment.

As always, if you have email changes, let me know:subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

CALL FOR INTEREST FROM NEW SMYRNA

I am working on development of an I-4 Corridor Exhibition in conjunction with Convergence 2008 in Tampa next June.  I already have 120 artists that just applied to my Stretching the Threads Exhibition with mind-blowing exciting work.  Each gallery would have the opportunity to select from this group or to bring in their own fiber artists.

The Convergence is by the HGA – Handweavers Guild of America, Inc. – and they will publish gallery booklets including all the exhibitions. Participating galleries get 2000 booklets for each location.  Galleries would also be supplied with postcards for their mailing lists. This is internationally advertised and they expect 5,000 people just to visit Tampa for their workshops and vendor’s hall in the convention center.  Check out www.weavespindye.org for more information.

I’d like to do several galleries in Celebration, Orlando, Winter Park, Maitland, Altamonte, Lake Mary, Sanford, DeLand, New Smyrna Beach, Daytona, Ormond, and other galleries along the way.  My idea was that fiber artists do “shop hops” from city to city checking out fabric stores.  Why not “gallery hop” across to Tampa!  This also gives local people a chance to participate without the long trip to Tampa.

Let me know if you are interested and would like to participate. Please pass this on to other galleries so I can build a larger base of contacts. The Convergence is only for June 22-28 but some galleries in Tampa are covering June and July.
