Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #115

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

January 6, 2008

Quilting Friends,

This is Florida’s quilting high-season…get out there and see some shows!!  I look forward to visiting the show in Ft. Myers next weekend; I hope to see you there.

I don’t know if any of your new year’s resolutions are green, as in saving the environment, but just in case they are, one of my resolutions is to share with you some of my favorite green living tips.  Feel free to share yours too for future newsletters!  If we don’t start changing the way we simply live, there won’t be much left of this earth for our grandchildren.  That is a given.

So here is Tip #1: instead of using paper towels around the house, use old washcloths stashed in a drawer.  They actually work better for cleaning up spills, drying countertops, wiping fingers while cooking, etc.  If your washing machine is not handy for the dirty cloths, keep a bucket under the sink and take them to the laundry room periodically.  You don’t even need to wash them separately, just throw them in with the regular wash.  Think how much paper you will save from the landfill!

As always, if you have email changes, let me know:subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

QUILT DOCUMENTATION

SSQA begins new grant program for Quilt Documentation Days

The Sunshine State Quilters Association is offering mini-grants for groups to host Quilt Documentation Days. The purpose is to encourage more groups to hold this type of event, with the ultimate hope of getting Florida quilts added to the Quilt Index database (http://www.quiltindex.org)

Applications will be accepted from groups who are based in Florida, and are planning a Documentation Day that is open to the public. The amount requested must be for a particular expense incurred for the Documentation Day, and the group should collect the information using forms compatible with the Quilt Index.

The period for applying is January 1 through March 31st. The Awards Committee will meet in April or May to decide which groups will receive grants, and the funds will be distributed in June. Documentation Days should be held within one year of receiving the grant.

Complete information is posted on the SSQA website (http://www.ssqa.org), along with printable forms, articles about hosting a Quilt Documentation Day, and hotlinks to many additional resources.

Sunshine State Quilters Association meeting March 8 in Mt. Dora

The Spring Meeting is one you won’t want to miss.  It will be held on March 8th (Saturday) at the Community Center in Mt. Dora at 5th and Donnelly Streets.  Diane McClure will be the speaker and has a great trunk show in store for you. Diane, a self taught quilter, has been quilting since 1986.  So far, more than 75 of her works have won local and national awards.

Diane McClure, formerly Johnston, of Davie Fl., presently lives in Citrus Springs Fl. with her husband Ralph and their pets Kiki, the cat, and Jasmine, the greyhound.

Your reservation for the meeting will also include admission to the Lake County Quilt Show in Mt. Dora on March 7th (Friday).  The hours are 9 am to 4 pm.  There will be approximately 250 quilts hanging, 20 vendors, a great boutique, raffles and demonstrations.

If you would like to make hotel reservations for Friday, March 7th, a special price for accommodations has been negotiated at The Day’s Inn, 15000 US Highway 441, Eustis, FL 32726.  The double bed rate is $79.19 (regular price is $87.99).  This price is for 2 people; it would be $5 per person extra if there are more in the room.  In order to get this special price you will need to contact either Bobbi or Gladys at the hotel directly at 352-742-8022.  This is a brand new facility and is the #1 rated Days Inn for guest satisfaction.  A continental breakfast will be included in the morning.

A great time is planned and the attendance form will be in the next newsletter.  Be sure to sign up.
