Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #120

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

June 2, 2008

Quilting Friends,

I’ve have been machine quilting my heart out lately, now that my mid-arm quilting machine has come back from the dead.  Thanks to Jon Keel, I’m humming along, finishing that great big pile of tops in the closet.  I’ve posted pictures of my latest 4 quilts at www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com/pictures.htm.  Scroll down to the bottom to see the latest.  I hope you take a peek!

My guild, Central Florida Quilters Guild, will be hosting teacher Sunny Malesky at the end of June.  If you’d like to join us for a Friday or Saturday class with Sunny, see the item below.

I don’t know if any of your new year’s resolutions are green, as in saving the environment, but just in case they are, one of my resolutions is to share with you some of my favorite green living tips.  Feel free to share yours too for future newsletters!  If we don’t start changing the way we simply live, there won’t be much left of this earth for our grandchildren.  That is a given.

Tip #6

If you’re like me, after you pick up the mail from the box, you stand over the recycle bin and throw out most of the catalogs.   Why not just stop them from coming in the first place?  Go to www.CatalogChoice.org and sign up.  You can then browse or search their very long list of catalogs to “decline”.  I’m thrilled to find out how easy it is…couldn’t wait to tell you!  Thanks to Linda Masters for the idea.

A similar idea belongs to www.GreenDimes.com who will stop your other junk snail mail and they’ll even plant a tree in your honor.  Thanks to Kelly Woodworth for that head’s up.

As always, if you have email changes, let me know:subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

ART QUILT STUDIO SALE IN NEW SMYRNA

Fiber Artist Lauren Austin will be holding a sale on June 7th between 9 AM and 4 PM at her studio at the Atlantic Center for Arts in New Smyrna Beach.  Lauren’s unique and dramatic pieces have been featured in many newspaper and magazine articles.  They combine beautiful hand-dyed fabrics with quilted figures, drawings, hand made embellishments and photos.  Lauren’s prize-winning work has been exhibited nationally at such venues as the CINTAS Center of Xavior University, the Sedgewick Cultural Center in Philadelphia, the Everson Museum in Syracuse, the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis and regionally at the Florida Museum of Art in Deland, the Bethune Cookmen University Performing Arts Center, and the Elliott Museum in Stuart.  Her quilt ‘He Drums Lubolo’ was one of the cover photos for the acclaimed art book ‘Textural Rhythms’ by reknown quilter and author, Dr. Caroline Mazloomi.

This is a true DISCOUNT SALE with prices for her wall quilts ranging from $90 for 24” x 36” pieces to $1,800 for 60” x 80” works and larger.  Lauren has recently contracted with a gallery in Miami and prices for all her artwork will be set much higher in the future.  Lauren, who is also an educator and storyteller will be sharing the stories behind her quilts and demonstrating her technique for ‘quilt drawing’ on her long arm sewing machine during the day.  Proceeds from the sale will help finance Lauren’s trip this summer to work with 150 AIDS orphans at the Kakamega Care Center in Kakamega, Kenya East Africa.

From Roni McCullough-Sheppard:

I am proud to say I was a recipient of a Florida Artist Enhancement Grant this past November. I am using the grant to attend the Shibori Symposium at the Textile Center in St. Paul, MN from June 3 to June 10th.

Workshop instructors at the symposium include Yoshika Wada, Jan Myers-Newberry and Ana Lisa Hedstrom among many others. This is like taking golf lessons from Tiger, Anika and Lorena!!  Wada, Jan and Ana are amazing practitioners of the art of Shibori dyeing.

I look forward to coming back to Florida chock full of teachable info.
