Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #126

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

December 3, 2008

Quilting Friends,

If you’ve ever wondered what your sewing thread looks like under a microscope, here are some views.  You’d be surprised at which brands of thread have lots of fuzzies, and which ones are smooth.  In case you wondered, fuzzies are bad…they gum up your sewing machine.  Take a look:  http://sewing.about.com/library/weekly/aa102100a.htm

You may remember that I’ve listed a couple of longarm machines for sale in the past.  Well, they were sold so quickly from those listings, that I’ve decided to include a Classified Section in this newsletter.  If you have something sewing or quilt related to sell, consider an advertisement in this newsletter.  There are over 1600 interested readers in Florida and beyond.  The charge is $50 for your ad, which will include two listings (two consecutive newsletters) for a single ad.  Please send your ad to ad@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com, and look for a reply from me with instructions for sending the payment.

Nolting Pro 24 with stitch regulator with regular bobbin.  Includes patterns, stand alone bobbin winder, bobbins, pantographs, books, extra parts and Ruler Mate.  This machine is 1 1/2 years old with low "mileage".  Approximate value $16,500.  Will sell for $11,000.  Call Carol at Busy Fingers Quilt Shop at 407-767-5123.  We are closing the shop Dec. 13 and the entire inventory is discounted 50%.

I don’t know if any of your new year’s resolutions are green, as in saving the environment, but just in case they are, one of my resolutions is to share with you some of my favorite green living tips.  Feel free to share yours too for future newsletters!  If we don’t start changing the way we simply live, there won’t be much left of this earth for our grandchildren.  That is a given.

Tip #12

Here we are again…tripping over bags of phone books by the door…I swear I think they are bringing them to us sooner than every 12 months, aren’t they?  Anyway, I think I can count on one hand the times I’ve cracked a phone book open in the past year (not when there’s Google, baby!).  I was glad to hear about an organization that will take your name off the phone book delivery list.  Go to YellowPagesDelivery to stop phone book delivery to your home or office. Whew!  Glad that’s done.  And put those old phone books in your curbside delivery bin while you’re thinking about it.

Please let me know if these Green Tips have been useful to you and if you’d like to see more in 2009…send an email to: fqn@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

As always, if you have email changes, let me know:subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

Treat Yourself This Holiday Season!
Ami Simms Double Lecture in
Gainesville  canceled

Get your tickets now!

If Ami Simms hadn’t become an internationally known quilt instructor, author, and Alzheimer’s activist, she’d have been a stand-up comedian.  There’s still time to get your ticket for this exceptional event.  Seize this opportunity to bring some color and some quilting fun to your holiday season this year.

Ami Simms will be in Gainesville, Florida, December 13, 2008 for a very special double-lecture and trunk show.  Tickets – priced at a mere $10! – are now available.  (If you don’t know Ami and her work, just go to www.amisimms.com and get acquainted.)

Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild will host Ami, who will present two lectures with trunk shows, including  “Living With Quilts: A Survival Guide,” and a second on her Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative.  Even Madison, Ami’s Mom’s service dog, will get in on this act.

Ami will appear in the Oak Room in Oak Hammock at the University of Florida.  Oak Hammock is located west of U.S. 441, and 1.1 miles east of I-75, off Williston Road (southernmost of the four Gainesville exits).  Turn south at the Oak Hammock sign onto
S. W. 25th Terrace.  (Directions and map are on the www.QACDG.org website.)

Warning: Some GPS devices direct to the service entrance, about one mile west of the actual entrance to Oak Hammock.  Use directions as provided to avoid misdirection and delay.

This exceptional event is open to everyone.  Area guilds, seize this opportunity!  Doors open at 6:45 p.m., Ami will begin speaking at 7:30 p.m.  QACDG worked hard to keep tickets at just $10 per person – our guild’s gift to the central Florida quilting and sewing community.  Refreshments will be served.

To purchase tickets, send a self-addressed stamped envelope, and $10 per ticket, to:

   Laura Sills, Treasurer
   QACDG

1521 S. W. 96th Street

Gainesville, FL 32607

For information, contact Beverley Hilton at Bevhilton1 @ aol.com.

And . . . Wouldn’t it be great to present Ami with Journal Quilts to take back for her Alzheimer’s Initiative fund-raising auction?   Go to Ami’s website, www.amisimms.com   for information on the Alzheimer’s Initiative, and to print off the information list that must accompany all submissions.  (Or go to the QACDG website – www.qacdg.org – for a print-out of the info form.)  And to see more of Ami’s inspiring and uplifting quilts.

Dear Florida Quilt Network,

I am taking a shot in the dark here.  I am looking for someone who is knowledgeable with a certain brand of quilting machine.

I purchased a Baby Lock model BLQP/ Quilting Choice Professional. I have it on the pinnacle quilting frame.

When I purchased the machine one of the women who worked for me said she new how to operate it.  That woman is no longer with us and she did not know how to operate it.  I am in search of someone who can come and train me and my employees....or someone who can work for me quilting.

Please let me know if you think the quilting network can be of any assistance.

Thank you.
