Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #130

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

April 4, 2009

Quilting Friends,

I've been cooking and baking up a storm lately.  (Don't ask me why or I'll over think it and then I won't want to cook and bake anymore.  And then the family would be sad.)  Anyway, I've posted some of my latest recipes on my recipe page: www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com .  Check out the Sweet Potato Gnochi with Brown Butter and Sage.  I made it again last night for my brother.  We had fun together working the dough and forming the little guys.  And if you enjoy looking for new recipes, I recommend www.TasteSpotting.com  The photos alone are scrumptious.

Green Tip #15

Check your hot water heater.  Many installers set them to 140 degrees, but you can comfortably get away with closer to 120, which is hot enough to get your dishes clean, but it will save you 6-10% on water-heating costs.  Generally, you just find the thermostat on your water heater, and turn it down to 120 degrees (if the gauge doesn’t have degrees on it, try halfway between the low and medium settings.  After turning it down, you can check the water temp with a thermometer at the tap farthest from the water heater).  If you’re going to be out of town, you can turn the electric heaters off completely, or turn the gas ones down to the lowest setting (note: it will take 30 mins to 1 hour to completely heat back up).

As always, if you have email changes, let me know:subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

TEXTILE TOUR TO JAPAN

It’s April, the sun is shining and all’s well in Pacific Grove and I hope where ever you are.

We’ve had a lot of interest in our November 2009 textile tour to Japan and the spaces are filling. Several in the group have their airplane tickets. I should start learning how to use my chopsticks – well after returning from France in May.

Please check out the web site for details on the tour to Japan. Our latest news is that thanks to a friend, we’ve been in contact with a lovely Japanese woman who lived in San Diego for six years, at which time my friend taught her to quilt. She now lives in Osaka and a few years ago became a licensed guide interpreter. She will be our guide for our mornings in Kyoto.

Ruby Seto and I are exciting about the activities we’ve planned and we hope you’ll join us. We are counting on word of mouth, so please forward this message to friends and family who would enjoy this tour.

Don’t hesitate to contact me with your questions.

SUMMER QUILTING RETREATS

Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

I just wanted to drop you a quick note to update you on our Summer Retreat schedule.  Attached is our summer schedule flyer that you can post in your shop/website/newsletter/blog or email to your quilt friends/guild members.

Several of you have contacted me about teaching at an upcoming retreat and we are currently working on our Fall and 2010 schedule.  Please send your class/workshop list with fees.  If you are out of state (not in Florida) please let us know if you will fly or drive and the estimated travel fees.  Tampa, Clearwater, and Orlando are the airports to use for flights.

First we have Margaret Miller joining us July 8-12.  Margaret will arrive Wednesday night and teach Thursday and Friday.  The workshop will be a two day class on her book Angle Play.  You can see examples of the designs possible with this technique at  http://www.millerquilts.com/workshops.html   Here is the link to the supply list... http://www.millerquilts.com/workshops/wkshp-angleplay.html   Don't forget to scroll down to the two-day workshop list.  Seating is limited to 25, so sign up NOW!

July 22-26 is our MYSTERY QUILT RETREAT.  Pat has a great mystery quilt lined up for you, with three sizes available.  You won't want to miss all the fun of seeing how everyone's fabrics work with this mystery.

July 29- Aug 2 is Mom's Summer Camp.  What better time to get away for a few days than when the kids are all at their own summer camps.  Come recharge YOUR batteries while the kids are away.  You can sew till the wee-hours of the morning or sleep in if you like.  Bring any project you want to work on.  There will be plenty of room to layout the quilt you want to finish or the one you just haven't had time to even start.  And don't forget that we always have a massage therapist available on Saturday if you want to treat yourself to a little extra pampering while there's no-one pulling on your apron strings.

August 12-16 Debbie Caffrey will be here to help you tame all those 2 1/2 inch strips of fabrics with designs from her book "Can of Worms".  This is a two day class Thursday & Friday.  Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday you will have time to work on other projects you may have brought, finish the quilt from class, sleep in, go shopping, or get a massage.  See Debbie's website for class description and supply lists.  http://www.debbiescreativemoments.com/quilting-lectures-workshops.htm#WORMS  Seating is limited to 25, so sign up NOW!

You won't want to miss our last retreat of the summer...!!!

September 23-27 we are featuring Bonnie McCaffery.  She will be teaching two one-day classes.  On Thursday enjoy learning about "Face Painting"  http://bonniemccaffery.com/teaching/workshops/paintedface.html and Friday will be "Fantasy Fabric" http://bonniemccaffery.com/teaching/workshops/fantastfab.html.  Seating is limited to 25, so sign up NOW!

For more information about any of our upcoming retreats please see our website, www.BeSewCreative.com .  Registration forms can be printed directly from our website.  Please don't hesitate to email me with any questions you may have about these retreats or to schedule a private retreat for your group, guild or shop (min. 10 participants).  Please forward this email along to your quilting friends, guild members and local quilt shops.

Looking forward to seeing you at a Retreat real soon!

Sincerely,

Rhonda Baker
