Quilting Friends,

I’d like to tell you about the best kept secret in Florida.  Most people have never heard of Camp Boggy Creek just north of Orlando, but I’m sure you’ve all heard of its famous founder, Paul Newman.  The Camp is a godsend for seriously ill children all over Florida, giving them a normal camp experience, no matter what their chronic or life-threatening illness is.  Each week during the summer, Camp Boggy Creek hosts around 150 children, ages 7 to 17.  Each week the Camp welcomes children with a particular disease, whether it is Spina Bifida, Cancer, heart issues, etc.  The kids can then hang with other kids who have the same issues, and lifelong friendships are made.  A medical staff is brought in specializing in that particular illness, and the parents can be confident the kids are getting the best care during their fun week.  The camp has all the usual activities and events:  fishing, swimming, canoeing, archery, crafts, horseback riding, a petting zoo, a dance at the end of the week, and more.  For the first time, these kids feel normal and safe to be themselves.  The camp is independent of the other 12+ Hole-in-the-Wall Camps around the world, and must do all their own fundraising.

I encourage you to learn more about the Camp at www.BoggyCreek.org, and tell parents of seriously ill children about it.  So many do not know they even have this opportunity available to them!  And since you’re a quilter, click on the ‘How to Help’ button to find out about their ongoing need for Quilts, Afghans and Bears.  Since every camper goes home with an afghan and a bear, they need lots of help!

The Skinny Envelope: This is an invite to anyone who lives in Florida and gets one of those skinny envelopes from Houston this year.  The Gateway Art Center in DeBary will host the works of 40 Florida fiber artists who were rejected.  Send your jpeg image and a copy of your rejection letter as soon as you get one.  Of course, this opens you to another possible rejection, but hey, this might be the best show of your year!  The Gateway is a beautiful center created by dedicated volunteers who spent 10 years raising three million dollars so they could open without a mortage. Exhibition is October 25 - November 21. Mary McBride, mrsgorgon@gmail.com

BRAZ CAUZ Gateway Center for the Arts, on behalf of FLORIDA HOSPITAL Fish Memorial, announces a Call for Entries to create one-of-a-kind themed art bras. Braz Cauz – turn bras into art to be auctioned to raise funds to benefit women in the fight against breast cancer. A selection of the entries will be displayed at the Seminole Towne Center Mall in Sanford during September. Braz Cauz art will also be on exhibit and open for bidding at the Gateway Center for the Arts October 9 -20, with artist’s reception Tuesday, October 20, from 6 to 8:30 pm. The reception will give the public an opportunity to meet the artists, view their art and enjoy an awards presentation. The Silent Auction will close at the end of the evening. To RSVP for this free event, call (386) 917-7197. Deadline for entries: August 14, 2009 at 5:00 pm. Entry forms are available online at www.fhfishmemorial.org or from:

Gateway Center for the Arts, 880 N. Highway 17-92, DeBary, Florida 32713

The Pink Ribbon Tea takes place October 1, 2009, from 11:30 am to 3 pm at the Lake Mary Marriott. All BRAZ CAUZ entries will be unveiled and on exhibit for Silent Auction bidding during the Tea which features the opening of the Braz Cauz Silent Auction, live music, a luncheon, a physician panel discussion and Q&A. To RSVP for this free event, visit www.fhfishmemorial.org  or call (386) 917-5458 by September 25.

Call for Florida Artists www.gatewaycenterforthearts.org – Go to their website to pick up their call for Florida artists.  Applications due by September 1.  This is a new art center is in DeBary and they are showing a lot of high quality artists already. The Gateway Art League runs the Center.  They are fiber friendly!  One of the reasons they let me play with them is because of my fiber connections. There is also a gift shop which carries small art on commission.  Since the Center is new on the scene, they are looking for instructors with creative programs and would love to fill the auditorium with installations, experimental theater and whatever!

WORLD QUILT SHOW – FLORIDA TO PREMIER IN WEST PALM BEACH

The Palm Beach County Convention Center will be host to the first World Quilt Show – Florida this coming

November 13-15, 2009. Mancuso Show Management, a Pennsylvania based firm promoting quilt festivals

throughout the U.S. for over 20 years is very confident with the southeast Florida location. “The early

enthusiastic response has been more than encouraging,” states David Mancuso a partner in the firm. “The venue

is perfect for both a public show and a quilting conference.” The show management company also has an

existing large customer base along the entire eastern seaboard, having a résumé of successful festivals from New

Hampshire to South Carolina.

Someone may say why such a “worldly” title for a show taking place in West Palm Beach, Florida? Well, the

answer is simple; the event will be host to the 2009 Grand Finale of the World Quilt Competition XIII. This

international quilt contest draws entries from across the globe. Last year’s 2008 competition displayed quilts

from ten countries spanning the U.K., Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, Australia and New Zealand. It is the

largest and most comprehensive showing of international quilts in the United States.

The show will also present a Florida state-wide prize money competition. Entrants are required to be residents of

the state of Florida. This, along with many other special exhibitions is sure to create a spark of excitement with

enough “eye candy” to satisfy all the quilt loving enthusiasts who will be in attendance.

The festival will also boast a Merchants Mall with a line-up of nationally known vendors offering everything

imaginable for quilters, wearable artists and home sewers.

Although the show is open three days (Friday thru Sunday) for viewing and shopping, you may want to preregister

and arrive one day early (Thursday, November 12) to start your participation in workshops and lectures.

The conference side of the festival has summoned up a well-known faculty including such names as Robbi Joy

Eklow, Pepper Cory, Pat Yamin, Bobbie Bergquist, Ami Simms, Nancy Prince and several others to present

seminars throughout the extended weekend (Thursday thru Sunday). Pre-registration and other information is

available on the show’s website, www.worldquilt.com.
