Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #135

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

October 2, 2009

Quilting Friends,

Lots and lots to share with you this month, I’m so glad everyone in Florida is sharing their news with us….

First off, if you live anywhere near Sanford, I invite you to join a little informal quilting group that we recently started.  We’re calling ourselves iQuilt, and we meet monthly on the fourth Thursday to sit, sew, show-n-tell, share great quilting info, and generally enjoy a fun quilting evening.  We try to have a fun program each month, but if the topic is something that doesn’t interest you, there is plenty of room to do your own thing.  See more on my guild page: www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com/guilds.htm and search for ‘iQuilt’.

I recently discovered an online quilt show with 579 quilts displayed.  One blogger has invited lots of other bloggers to publish a photo of their favorite quilt and write about it.  I look at a few quilts every night after a long day of running around.  Its fun to read what the creators say about their quilts:

http://parkcitygirl.blogspot.com/2009/04/quilt-festival-spring-2009.html

Another website with beautiful quilts to look at and actually vote on is here:

http://quiltinggallery.com/quilters-fun/natures-best/

I also wanted to let you know about my adventures with Sulky’s KK2000 basting spray.  You may have noticed that the spray can has recently changed to a green top (from blue) and I have noticed that when I used the spray, the quilt sandwich did not hold together as well as before.  So I wrote to Sulky with my concerns, and here is their answer:

Because the new, state-of-the-art directional spray nozzle in the green-capped can delivers the glue more slowly and more precisely, you need to hold it over the area a little longer than you did with the blue-capped can. By moving the can more slowly, more product will be delivered to your project.  The new KK 2000 is just as sticky and does NOT require more product in total, just slower movement to deliver it.

Some people may perceive that they are using more product for the same amount of stickiness, but the reality is they are not.

One of our product testers suggests that if you are accustomed to a certain application movement from using the blue-capped can, spray LIGHTLY on both surfaces, using the same touch and movement you used with the blue-capped can, and the result will be equal, if not better than, the original.

She says:  “Because the new nozzle delivers a tighter spray pattern, I can target more precisely, so the coverage goes where I want it.  I pay more attention to the edges so I get an even dispersal in those areas.  The amount of overspray with this new formulation and directional spray nozzle is MUCH LESS.  Before, I held the can 6 to 10 inches above the project and sprayed.  Now I get the best results when the can is 5 to 8 inches above the project.  With a smaller target area, it does take a bit longer to dispense the same amount of product.”

Thank you again for taking the time to write to us with your concerns.  I am going to post this information on our website and I hope it will be helpful to anyone who feels the difference like you did.

Kind regards,

Patti Lee
Vice President
Consumer Relations
Sulky of America

PS: I used the spray again tonight, and kept the bottle at 6 from the fabric, slowed down my motions, and it worked much better than before.  I hope this information helps!

FLORIDA QUILT STUDY GROUP MEETING

The next meeting of the Florida Quilt Study Group will be held on Saturday, October 10th at the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shop in Trenton. Doors open at 9:30am; meeting begins at 10:00am. The topic for the morning session is quilt borders.

There are quilts with no border (but maybe needed one), quilts with lyrical appliqued vines and flowers, intricately pieced borders, some simple, some whacky, some wild, over the top, or just insane! What quilts have you seen that were remarkable for the borders? Did you ever buy a quilt just for the border? Bring photos or your own quilts to show.

After a lunch break in the cafe, we return to the afternoon session which is open. Bring whatever you would like to show and discuss, a new acquisition, a new discovery or something you have been wondering about. For more information, contact Mary Anne Randall at sewmuch63@hotmail.com

Rooted in Tradition:  Art Quilts from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum continues through October 25, 2009 at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

This exhibition chronicles the history of the art quilt movement from 1980 through the present.  All sixty-four quilts on display are on loan from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum's permanent collection of more than 350 quilts.  The exhibition illustrates the evolution from the traditional craft of quilt making to the contemporary art form of today.  Admission is free for this exhibition.

Additionally, the Museum will host a workshop with Maya Schonenberger entitled The Landscape of Quilting - An Art Quilt Workshop.  You will learn to design your own quilted landscape.  The background consists of an easy machine-piecing method.  Raw edge appliqué and 3-D embellishment are used for details such as leaves, bushes, etc.  Stems and tree trunks are pieced and thread painted.  Bring in your sewing machine and have fun experimenting with different techniques and materials.
