Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #136

Quilting Friends,

I’m trying not to become a total quilting blog fanatic, but it’s hard.  There are some really solid bloggers out there, sharing an amazing amount of quilting information, photos, tutorials, videos, etc.  Here is a blogger who designs a new free-motion quilting design EACH DAY, and a video to go with it.  I’m so impressed:  http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/

TOUR OF FRANCE

Hello Everyone,

The Textile tour to Japan is just around the corner. Most of the group of 22 people leaves for Kyoto on November 2nd; we return on November 17th. We are pulling out our suitcases and deciding how much empty space to leave for the goodies we hope to bring back.

That said, last evening Bonnie and I chatted about our May tour to France. Four spaces remain to be filled for our May 2010 tour. We've made additions to our web site and urge you to take a look. I've added a link to a PDF file, so you can easily download a brochure for the tour. Why didn't I think of this sooner? I've attached it above.

And I've put on the web site an October "sneak peek" with details about the Paris neighborhood in which we'll be staying.

Come, join the group and enjoy the fun of visiting Paris and Normandy with our small group.

CALL FOR QUILT BLOCKS

Hello,

I’m writing to you to ask you for your help. I work at the Orange County Regional History Center and we are about to open our new exhibit: Florida Fallen Heroes Quilt Project, November 3 – December 6, 2009. This exhibit of seven quilts in the History Center's grand staircase honors Florida's fallen heroes in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, as part of the Florida Fallen Heroes Quilt Project. Each square of every quilt displayed bears the name of a deceased soldier and expresses a patriotic design. This project was inspired by a young Florida seaman returning from duty in Iraq who expressed a desire to honor the friends he lost. You can read more about it here on our Web site: http://www.thehistorycenter.org/exhibits/upcoming/quilts

The Florida Fallen Heroes Quilt Project is in need of quilt square donations if they are to continue making these quilts. At the History Center, we’re trying to help out the Florida Fallen Heroes Quilt Project by giving every visitor who comes to the History Center between November 3 – December 6 , $2 off admission if they bring in a completed quilt square to donate to the Florida Fallen Heroes Quilt Project.

I am asking if I might be able to mail you some flyers for you to display at your quilting guild meetings or to hand out so that quilters will see the flyers and want to come to the History Center and donate a square they have completed. This would be a great way for quilters to quilt for a cause and help honor Florida’s veterans. You could even use this as a club project. The Florida Fallen Heroes Quilt Project asks that the completed quilt squares be 91/2" in size, with a patriotic or military design, and with enough space to write the name of the deceased service member.

If you are interested in helping our efforts, please send an email to Aven.Davis@ocfl.net

with the snail-mail address that I should mail the flyers to. Thank you for taking the time to read this post and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I’d really appreciate if you could help us make a difference for the soldiers and their families who have sacrificed so much for our freedom!

Sincerely,
