Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #137

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

January 4, 2010

Quilting Friends,

I’m trying not to become a total quilting blog fanatic, but it’s hard.  There are some really solid bloggers out there, sharing an amazing amount of quilting information, photos, tutorials, videos, etc.  Here is a blogger who designs a new free-motion quilting design EACH DAY, and a video to go with it.  I’m so impressed:  http://freemotionquilting.blogspot.com/

There are a LOT of posts in this particular newsletter. I skipped a month due to illness, but we’re also entering the beginning of Florida’s high season of quilt shows.  To get a complete listing of all the upcoming  shows, retreats, workshops, shop hops, exhibits, etc, please visit www.floridaquiltnetwork.com/calendar.html

QUILTS OF VALOR

Quilting Sisters Guild in Leesburg has applied and been accepted as a participant in the "Disney Give a Day Get a Day Program."  This new program sponsored by Disney offers one day park admission to one Million respondents who give a day.

The name of our volunteer opportunity is QSQOV.

Anyone who participates in making a Quilt of Valor after registering and following the instructions on the website and gives 8 hours of service to the QSQOV project, will be able to receive a certificate exchangeable for a one day admission to any Disney Park.  This opportunity is open to anyone who would like to participate (not just Quilting Sister members).

Anyone who is interested in becoming involved in this project can go to www.Disneyparks.com and follow the instructions to register.

For those unable to make a Quilt of Valor, there will be other ways to do the requisite eight hours of service to the QSQOV project and earn the certificate.

There are opportunities for label makers, machine quilters, quilt finishers, bag makers and deliverers.  Quilting Sisters would like to see as many people involved in this project as possible.

Please pass this information on to anyone you may know who may want to become involved in the Quilts of Valor project.

You need to go to the Disney website listed above and register and you will be contacted by one of our members.

Ellen Lindner Gains Recognition

It's always great when local quilters receive recognition, and Ellen Lindner has recently had some banner months.  First, she received an email from the U.S. State Department about their Art in Embassies Program.  This program borrows art from artists, museums, etc. and installs them in the residences of American ambassadors all over the world. And, although Ellen never applied to have her quilts considered, the program found her anyway.  She's been asked to loan Lakeside Citrus for display in the ambassador's residence in Tallinn, Estonia. Since Ellen has visited this charming medieval city, she was especially delighted to agree.

Ellen has written more about this honor and has included photos from Estonia on her blog:  http://adventurequilter.com/blog/?p=363

About the time Ellen's pulse slowed down, she received notification that three of her quilts (plus two detail shots,) were selected for publication in 500 Art Quilts, a Lark publication due out in the spring.  To top it all off, Ellen was thrilled to visit the World Quilt Show - Florida and find a pink Judge's Choice ribbon on her quilt Ripening.  Judge Pepper Cory said "I'd love to take this quilt home with me!"  Needless to say, Ellen is thrilled with all this excitement!
