Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #141

Quilting Friends,

I’ve been working hard this month on a new page for the website: LongArm Quilter’s Directory.  My goal is to have every single Florida longarm quilting business listed on the webpage, just like I have every quilt shop in Florida listed and every quilt guild in Florida listed.

I realize I’ve just begun; I’m sure there is just a fraction of the total on the page at this point, but it’s a start.  I need your help!   Please take a look and help me fill in the holes.  Forward this email to your favorite longarm business or two.

Quilt Shop owners, take a look at those LongArm business cards on your counter and see if I’m missing any.  Thank you so much!

Please send any new info or changes to me.

I’ve found a very useful video on the web by Marie Seroskie of Katie Lane Quilts.  She explains in terms we can all understand: how to make bias binding utilizing a ‘bias tube’.  I think I finally understand, now I need to make a scallop border to have a reason to make bias binding!

Here's a head's up on a very important day coming up: May 15 is "Give Your Stuff Away" day.  And that means that instead of throwing out useful items, you put them by the curb.  People will drive by and take what they can use.  What a wonderful idea, yes?  Here is more info: www.giveyourstuffaway.com .  This is happening all over the US, so please pass the word!

To get a complete, organized, hotlinked listing of all the upcoming shows, retreats, workshops, shop hops, exhibits, etc, please visit the calendar page.

A special request from a granddaughter:

My grandmother, Marilyn Lockwood, was a very prolific quilter who passed away unexpectedly about a year and a half ago. I have learned from one of her close friends that she had a few quilt tops finished and sent to a quilter, or possibly even a binder. We never received any notification or correspondence regarding these pieces, and my grandpa turned off Grandma's cell phone and their house phone a few months after she passed.

She originally lived in Orlando, the Pine Hills area, but relocated to Grande Isle near Eustis. I believe one of the quilts missing is an Irish Chain, with a tea-dyed fabric for background (as her friend described it), and another is some type of basket quilt. They would have been machine pieced, as her arthritis did not allow for much hand stitching, and probably were of a more primitive palette if they were like many of her other pieces. Sadly, she only labeled one quilt that we know of, and my brother has that one. These quilts would have shown up before 7/08, as she got sick in June of that year. Thank you for your help. I know we shouldn't hoard our lost loved ones' possessions, but her quilts seem to hold part of her spirit too.

Do you have any advice or suggestions for locating her last pieces?

Thank you,

Jenni

CALL FOR QUILTS

I hope you are keeping very well this wet and windy Monday…!!

I am writing to you because we are currently organizing our first Quilting and Fabric Arts Show taking place in October 2010 in Historic Cocoa Village. This first year we are planning this show in conjunction with our usual Fall Art and Crafts Show which takes place the third weekend in October.

Our 2-day Quilting and Fabric Arts Show will showcase quilts and quilting organizations from all over Florida and the south-Eastern states.

We plan on having many quilting vendors and Fabric suppliers, a showcase of your beautiful quilts in a historic setting and also a quilting contest with some fantastic prizes…!

I would like you to consider submitting some of your quilts for display or for competition purposes, or maybe you would like to organize a bus trip for your members to our Historic Village that weekend.

We have been hosting four craft shows each year for almost 30 years in Historic Cocoa Village and our Fall Craft Show is hugely popular.

Please let me know if you might be interested in hearing more about this event or if you would like some quilt competition details.

Have a great week…!!

Warm Regards,

Catherine Sligh
