Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #157

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

October 8, 2011

Quilting Friends,

I’m tweaking the newsletter format this month.  The width of the newsletter should be narrower, and hopefully easier to read.  Let me know what you think.

If you enjoyed seeing the Red & White Quilt Show in NYC a few months ago, take a look at this blog: a beautiful show inside a quilt shop.

This isn’t quilt related, but I thought I’d share a little kitchen tip that is working well for me.  I bought a dozen wide-mouthed quart mason jars, and also a dozen plastic tops (I could only find them at Walmart and Amazon).  I use these to store all kinds of things around the kitchen, and like the idea of using glass, not plastic, for storage:  honey, nuts, homemade tea concentrate, simple syrup, homemade chicken stock, lime juice, dried beans, raisins, the list goes on!  They are easy to clean, easy to see what’s inside, and easy to freeze (leave a few inches at the top).

To get a complete, organized, hotlinked listing of all the upcoming shows, retreats, workshops, shop hops, exhibits, etc, please visit the Calendar

Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine

QUILT DOCUMENTATION DAY IN OVIEDO

Join us for a Quilt Documentation Day

Hosted by the Oviedo Woman’s Club

Our goal:  To find and make records of the wonderful quilts currently residing in Florida.  They do not need to have been made in Florida. The information collected will be entered in the Quilt Index website.  The data & photos will be available to anyone who wants to view and study them online. Owners’ personal information is not part of the viewable historical record.

How it works:  Bring your quilt to the event where you will go to several stations where volunteers measure and examine the quilts, ask questions and fill in the form that collects all the information available. The quilt is photographed with a number on a card so the digital image can be matched to the correct paperwork later. Quilt owners are encouraged to bring with them as much information as possible about the quilt and its maker.

Cost:  This is a FREE event.  There is no charge to have your quilt(s) documented.

Extras:  Professional quilt appraiser Nan Moore will be available on a first come, first serve basis to offer a verbal evaluation of your quilt for $10 or a written appraisal for $40 if you choose to have this done.

When: Saturday January 28th, 2012 from 9:00 – 4:00.  No quilts will be accepted after 2:30.  Expect to spend a minimum of 2 hours.  More time may be required depending on the number of participants and if you have multiple quilts.  There will be an express lane for those having only one or two quilts to document.

Location: Oviedo Woman’s club:  414 King Street  Oviedo, FL

More Info: For more info on this event, please

email: sewing@oviedowomansclub.org or call Delaine at 407-359-1475.

We need volunteers, please contact us if you can help.

You do not need to be a quilt expert. Training is provided.

NEWS FROM EDUQUILTERS IN BREVARD COUNTY

The QAKH saga continues! We’ve been given SO much time by the quilters in our area! Making the quilts becomes addictive, and the spirit of the ladies is wonderful. We are serious about increasing awareness and help to end hunger and homelessness in our back yard.

EduQuilters in Brevard County who formed QAKH – Quilters Against Kids Hunger – are completing their quilt project of providing quilts to 600 “kids in transition,”  elementary and younger aged children who are without permanent shelter. Each child will receive a quilt to give them comfort and hope and warmth. This was a community project in which quilters from various guilds and churches assisted, as well as the city of Satellite Beach who donated the use of their auditorium, and Publix Super Markets, who added drinks and snacks during the quilt-ins.

The quilts are unusual and fun to make. Each quilt measures about 42” x 60”.  Kits were made using fun fabrics and bright solids which were cut in strips varying in width from 9” to 4” then assembled in interesting arrangements. The quilts are sandwiched, turned, stitched around the edges, then quilted in a hill and vale stitch along the seams to add sturdiness.

To add to the quilt making, the ladies are conducting raffles and book sales that produce funds for Second Harvest which distributes food to these kids’ families. Along with this hunger awareness project, Robert Barnes has formed a group of businessmen who are paying for weekend food packs which are distributed on Fridays to students. When the quilters heard about the food packs, they also made knapsacks which the children use to carry the food home on Fridays and bring back to school to be refilled. When the children first received their knapsacks they found them full of school supplies.

Seaside Piecemakers are selling raffle tickets @$1 each for a gorgeous quilt which a few members made. The hope to sell 10,000 tickets because the proceeds will go to The Second Harvest food bank.

Much is being done; more remains to be done before we wipe out hunger. QAKH encourages everyone to learn about hunger in their own community and help the children in their own back yards. We are learning about efforts being carried out across the country by grass roots people who have put aside politics and are putting their beliefs into action and understanding that charity begins at home.
