Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #160

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

January 4, 2012

Quilting Friends,

My family just returned from a very relaxing, fun-filled week of family reunion-ing in Siesta Key.  Of course I visited a few quilt shops.  Of course I found some new projects.  It’s what I do.  You?

I hope you’re gearing up for our big Quilt Show Season here in Florida.  I would venture to say there will be at least one quilt show a month near you, where ever you live, at least in the first quarter of the year.  So please, take advantage of the cheap entertainment!  After the admission fee, you can wander around the shows for free, marvel at the ingenuity and get your creative juices flowing. Quite a bargain.

As I'm adding this newsletter to the website, I'm realizing I'm starting my FOURTEENTH year of publishing these newsletters.  I told my husband at dinner tonight that I should write down the process at some point and he said "Its yours, honey.  No one else is going to do this."  He's probably right. Does that make me just a little bit nuts?

To get a complete, organized, hotlinked listing of all the upcoming shows, retreats, workshops, shop hops, exhibits, etc, please visit the Calendar

 Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine

Restoration & Repair of Antique Quilts with Trunk Show

Wednesday Jan 25th, 2012 7:15pm ~ Cypress Hall at Cypress Hammock Park

Let’s get those quilts from Grandma and start to use them again or better yet maybe you have stumbled on a “diamond in the rough” quilt at the flea market that just needs some new binding. Afraid? Don’t be.

With basic sewing skills a little historical knowledge and you can get that quilt back to its original state or let’s say pretty darn close. I will discuss my step by step approach to repair and restoration of quilts old and new. We’ll briefly discuss value and appraisal. We’ll review and critique the difference between repair and restoration. What textiles are used in repair and which textiles are used in restoration? We’ll review labeling, quilt care and finishing quilt tops. Please bring your damaged quilts.

Saturday Jan 28th, 2012 10am-4pm ~ Cypress Hall at Cypress Hammock Park

From Teddy Pruett:

Happy New Year to my quilting friends!

Did you know you don't have to wait two years between quilt shows to have your quilts appraised? Appraisals can be done during guild meetings or at someone's home. Get your friends together – I require a guarantee of at least $500 per day, very easily done with eight or ten written appraisals at $40 each and/or a few oral evaluations at $20 each. I'll be glad to throw my appraisal bags in the car and hit the highway. Just e-mail aprayzer@hotmail.com and we will work out the details.

I want to thank the many guilds who have allowed me the opportunity to share my lecture “Other People's Fleas” across the years – some more than once! I'd like to remind program chairs that there are more pretty great lectures for your enjoyment and education. For instance, don't you want to know how appraisers determine the value of YOUR quilt? How is valuing an antique quilt different from valuing a newly made quilt? You might be surprised at the answer! “Gilda Guildmember Goes to Appraisal School” is the program for you.

How about a little U.S. History? Is there a difference between quilts made by Northern ladies and their Southern sisters? You bet your grits there is! See the difference “in the cloth” with the lecture “Way Down Yonder.” Visit www.teddypruett.com and click “Lectures” in the left column for details. I hope to hear from you – and thanks! Teddy Pruett

GOOD NEWS FROM SATELLITE BEACH

Cheers to the QAKH volunteers in central Brevard county for the 315 quilts delivered in December to homeless elementary school aged kids. High school aged children are participating in the project and helping us quilt the quilts. Two girls decided to make quilts as their service project, so more people are realizing that Central Florida has the dubious distinction of having 1/3 of the homeless children in the United States. These “kids in transition” are also hungry, so we are selling tickets for a gorgeous raffle quilt with all proceeds going to Second Harvest to feed the children. We encourage everyone to look to their own Second Harvest agencies to help at this crucial time in our kids’ lives. QAKH is a project of EduQuilters, inc. based in Satellite Beach. For further info, contact Margie@cfl.rr.com. To see the raffle quilt produced by Seaside Piecemakers, go to http://www.seasidepiecemakers.com/

DETECTIVES NEEDED!!

A nationally respected quilt authority is curating an exhibit of famous quilts made by men.  He is seeking the whereabouts of the "Challenger Space Shuttle Quilt" made by Robert L. Hamilton of Titusville, FL in 1987.  The quilt is featured on Page 219 of the  "Florida Quilts" book.  Anyone who may have information about the quilt is requested to contact Teddy Pruett at aprayzer@hotmail.com.  Any information at all will be greatly appreciated. Time is of the essence.
