Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #162

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

March 4, 2012

Quilting Friends,

As I walked through the Lake County Quilt Show this morning, seeing so many great quilts, vendors and excited quilters, I thought about how lucky we are to have such a plethora of choices available to us.  So many styles, so many colorways, so many projects…and we want to do it all, don’t we?  I found some great bargains in the Boutique and couldn’t pass up a few pieces of fabric at the vendors, either.  I’m a happy camper.

In case you’re wondering (I was), my website gets about 10,000 hits a month.  Who knew!?

I also met a vendor who should be on my Shops Page, but wasn’t (he was even a newsletter subscriber!).  So here I have to ask…please check my website to make sure your quilt shop info is complete and correct.  I can’t do it all myself.  Really.

Also, if you belong to a Quilt Guild, I would ask you to take this opportunity to check your guild’s information on my website and let me know if I need to update contact info, meeting place info, or any other changes.  I was trying to contact Central Florida quilt guilds recently and several emails were no longer in use.

To get a complete, organized, hotlinked listing of all the upcoming shows, retreats, workshops, shop hops, exhibits, etc, please visit the Calendar

Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine

Gainesville, Florida – Don Beld, author, historian, quilter, and founder of the Home of the

Brave Quilt Project, has dedicated his life to honoring the families of fallen heroes.

Beld will bring his mission to Gainesville on Armed Forces Day 2012, presenting Remembering With Honor: One Quilter Salutes the Military and Other Heroes From the War on Terrorism

With the help of groups of quilters from all 50 states, Beld’s Home of the Brave Quilt Project hand-pieces, hand-quilts, and gives a quilt to each family that has lost someone in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Beld also has made remembrance quilts for each of the major 9/11 and other terrorist incidents.

Beld will take attendees on an exploration of commemorative quilt making by showing and discussing a series of quilts he has made. He will talk about his work with the Home of the Brave Quilt Project, and the National Iraq / Afghanistan Memorial Quilt Project, which currently consists of ten quilts modeled on a Civil War Soldier’s Quilt. The Project honors approximately 700 fallen heroes from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. A recognized expert on Civil War quilts, Beld wrote Civil War Quilts with co-author Pam Weeks. Their book was introduced in January of 2012.
