Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #187

April 10, 2014

Quilting Friends,

I’d like to extend a warm welcome to all the new readers of this newsletter.  Remember that you can go to the website anytime to read this or any other newsletter, look at the Calendar page to see everything in chronological order, etc

Hoo, boy, I just realized its April 10 and I hadn’t touched the newsletter. I’m usually a little more on top of things, but the deadlines and projects and lecture/workshop engagements kinda piled up there a little bit this month.  That and my daughter and husband have been working very hard building a set for her last high school play this weekend, and they consider me “support personnel”.

Yep, that’s me, lots of plate juggling going on right now.  Oh, and did I mention we spent a glorious week in Tampa with 7000 other high school Thespians competing on the State level?  I’m proud to say my daughter earned two Superior awards for her technical work.  Every moment has been a blast and I’m enjoying every project I do, so it’s hard to say ‘no’ every once in a while, as my husband reminds me I should do.

We do have a few new pieces of news below.   Enjoy!

MODERN QUILTING RETREAT IN SEBRING

We have a few spots left in our upcoming Florida Modern Quilt Retreat on May 15-18, 2014 at the Kenilworth Lodge in Sebring Fl.  If you are new to modern quilting, this will be a great time to learn more about it and work on a new quilt in the modern style.  We will have lots of time for ‘sew on your own’ as well as lectures and mini-workshops.

Please announce this retreat in your guild newsletters or post on your blogs.  I’ve also attached a Flyer and Registration Form that you can print or email to your members.

Quilters Workshop of Tampa Bay announces its’
35th Anniversary Quilt Show in 2015

For over 35 years quilters, fiber artists and fans of quilts have looked to the Quilters Workshop of Tampa Bay for one of the finest quilt shows in the region. 2015 marks the 35th anniversary of this biannual show which will prove that Quilting is a Celebration!
The 2015 show will take place Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th at the Salvation Army Community Worship Center at 1100 W. Sligh Ave. in Tampa. Times for the show are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on Friday and 9:00 am to 4:00 pm on Saturday. Admission is $7.00

In addition to an outstanding collection of NQA Certified judged quilts, this year’s show will also include a Creative & Classic Small Quilt Auction on Saturday, our Celebration! Challenge Quilts and Boutique / Basket Walk. QWS’ legendary Tea Room & Café will return, where all our food is home made by the guild.

This year’s Raffle Quilt is a colorful Florida take on Sarah Vedeler’s embroidered appliqué Sedona Surprise design which QWS has titled Sunrise Celebration. Alive and vibrant in blues, greens, pinks, oranges and purples, Sunrise Celebration is a stunning, phantasmagoric example of embroidery, precision piecing and long-arm quilting which must be seen in person. Raffle tickets will be available at the show. The winner need not be present for the Saturday afternoon drawing.
The Salvation Army Community Worship Center is one mile west of Interstate 275 at the Sligh Ave. exit and is immediately across the street from Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.

Open letter to SSQA members and friends:

It is with sadness we report that the dissolution of Sunshine State Quilters Association was completed on August 31, 2013.

Our members will recall that in December of 2012 a letter from the SSQA Board was sent to all members stating that, due to lack of member participation, the Board was prepared to present a proposal to the membership to dissolve SSQA. At that time, we had a total of 152 members: 98 individuals (34 charter), 48 guilds (13 charter) and 6 merchants. The President, Vice President and Newsletter Chairman had all resigned due to business obligations. Art Callinan volunteered to return as president but no one else stepped up to take an office. At that time, members were given an opportunity to vote on keeping the organization going or dissolving it. Members who voted to retain the organization were asked what role they would play in helping to run the organization. We are sorry to say that the members did not step up and offer to help.

We had a wonderful 17 years. There were great local meetings, symposiums, quilt shows, raffle quilts, and many other events. We got to know quilters from around the state. We were especially proud of the Documentation Projects. Documentation Days, held in different parts of the state, documented a total of 726 quilts for the Quilt Index at Michigan State University.

SSQA gave grants totaling $10,334.35 to Florida groups to help underwrite Documentation Days. The breakdown, less unused  funds returned to us, is as follows:

Grants                                         $10,799.74
Unused funds returned                     465.39
Net grants awarded                   $10,334.35

At the dissolution of a 501(c)(3) organization, all money left in the treasury has to be given to another 501(c)(3) organization with the same goals. Our final treasury, $11,412.46, has been given to the Quilt Index of Michigan State University. It will be used to help establish the Quilt Index Endowment. Their intention is to credit the Sunshine State Quilters Association as the founding sponsor of the Quilt Index Guild Project. We support the use of our donation to start the Quilt Index Endowment. They will not be giving grants to guilds but will be happy to work with guilds to give them ideas of where they can source funds.

The Quilt Index Guild Project is a new initiative to encourage Quilt Guilds to join the Quilt Index. The Project is in the planning stages but when completed, each participating quilt guild will get:

Their own web page.
Training in how to add information.
A place in the Quilt Index where all of the guild’s quilts can be displayed.
The ability to compare their members’ quilts with thousands of other quilts.
The ability to document their quilt shows to create a permanent record of these events.

AND, BEST OF ALL, there will be words to the effect that:

Initial development of the Quilt Index Guild Project
was supported by funds
from the Sunshine State Quilters Association

If you have any questions regarding the Quilt Index Guild Project, please contact www.quiltindex.org direct.

We do not have any “words of wisdom” to close with except keep quilting and may all your stitches be small ones.

Pat Lester, Recording Secretary
Sarah Hough, Membership Secretary
Linda Koestel, Treasurer
