Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #209
February 4, 2016

Quilting Friends,

I just finished this fun project...I decoupaged lots of favorite magazine pictures of quilts onto my new Thread Palace. Eleven drawers to keep my thread handy and dust-free. I have yet to label the drawers, however. That needs to happen. Click on the image to see a larger version. If you're wondering, I found the original set of drawers at a vintage shop. It used to hold LPs, I think. I used Mod Podge and a sponge applicator. Lots of thin layers. And yes, with 3 collections of thread (embroidery, sewing and quilting), I have alot.

I just returned from an annual Quilt Retreat, and I have to say, quilters are the most generous people!  We are glad to share ideas, thoughts and techniques with each other, and we are always glad to see each other learn and improve.  So nice.

I hope I’ll see you at the first annual AQS show in Daytona Beach at the end of February.  Lots of great classes and lectures are available to us…don’t pass up this great opportunity to learn from some of the masters in our field. In case you're not familiar with 'AQS', this the Amrican Quilter's Society and they produce 'Paducah', one of the largest quilt shows in America.

Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine

Feb 24-25 Quilt Show in Naples info here

My church was the recipient of a deceased “hoarder’s” legacy. She kept every piece of fabric, hank of yarn and pattern that she ever bought. We are having a sale of her “treasures” on Feb. 6 starting at 10 am.

It’s at Trinity Lutheran Church on the corner of 12th and Rte. 1.  The address for your GPS is 1205 Ridgewood Ave, Holly Hill, FL 32117 .   Easiest way to get there is to travel South on Beach Street, turn West at Walker (which would be 13th if they had a 13th), pass over Daytona St. and left on Holly. The parking lot is on your right.

The fabric is all listed at $1.00 a yard, the yarn at $1.00 a skein and the patterns (I think) at the same. Every piece of fabric is priced as there are multiple sizes.

For all who will attend the American Quilter's Society Quilt Week in Daytona Beach Feb 24-27, plan to stop by the Caohagan Island quilt booth, No. 1131, which will be just inside the vendor area next to show quilts. Caohagan Island, a 13-acre island in the central Philippines is home to 600 people of which more than 100 are quiltmakers. Sale of their one-of-a-kind, handmade quilts provides one third of the island's income. Quilts from the island were exhibited at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky, during the summer and fall of 2015, and additional national exhibitions are planned in 2016 and 2017.

Dana E. Jones, a former editor of Quilters Newsletter and author of Pagtinabangay: The Quilts and Quiltmakers of Caohagan Island, will be at the booth to share the story, sign copies of her book and sell you your very own Caohagan quilt. The tropical images and bright colors of the quilts are perfect for Florida homes. Quilts come in small sizes to hang, complete with hanging sleeves, and larger sizes for beds, couches or walls. And you can custom order queen- and king-size quilts. Proceeds from the quilt sales go back to the quiltmakers.
Dana will present a slide presentation on the quilts and island life at 11 a.m. Friday, February 26 in the vendor hall learning center. Come see and hear about Caohagan Island, then get together with Dana to schedule a time for her to present to your guild in early 2017 when she will return to Florida for speaking and teaching engagements.
