Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #217

Quilting Friends,
Although October is the busiest month of my year, I found this pattern at the Jacksonville Quilt Show and had to make it right away.  It was nice to have a little something to sew on when I had a few minutes free.  Find the pattern here.

Not a lot of new quilting news, but that’s OK because we need to save our strength for the big Jan/Feb/Mar Quilting Season.  Till then, I’ll be finishing up projects so I will have room for new ones!  Keep reading down, because there are a few fun things coming up…

If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.
Happy Quilting,   Mary-Jeanine
PS: I love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime!

If You Love History With Your Quilt

Historic Homestead is the second oldest town in Miami-Dade. Although their incorporation was in 1913, pioneering farmers camein the late 1800s and the initial survey for Henry Flagler’s amazing Overseas Railroad began there. The first municipal building, the combined Town Hall, Fire and Police Station, was opened in 1917 and later converted to a museum. It is open Tu-Sat, 1-5 at no charge to the public. A talented quilter from Illinois who enjoys the museum volunteered to create a lovely quilt to use in a raffle. As part of the area’s legacy, a famous artist created some beautiful linen postcards in the 1940s-60s which are prized collectibles. The quilter took many of these postcard images, transferred them to fabric and incorporated them into her design. Homestead is also one of the few places in the country that sits between two National Parks – the Everglades and Biscayne. This unique aspect was the other design inspiration. The individual who won the raffle donated the quilt back and it has been put up for sale for $800 with all proceeds going to support the museum. If you are in the mood for a day or even overnight trip, come view this beautiful quilt, tour the museum, take a walking tour of the historic section or pick from a dozen other local attractions. Or if you’re headed to the Keys, stop in Homestead on the way. The museum is at 41 N. Krome Ave, Homestead, FL 33030.
