Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #229
www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com
Nov 5, 2017

Quilting Friends,

You know, mostly I keep this newsletter about Quilting in Florida; there is so much to tell you about…shows, shop-hops, exhibits, national teachers coming in, retreats, cruises, awards, classes, etc.

But I suppose once in a while I can jump in to tell you that I love to travel to visit other guilds and groups around the state to present my Stashbuster series of lectures.  I also teach workshops while I’m there.  Yep, I’ve been doing this for 6 years.  I’ve been told by lots of quilters that my presentation to their guild was one of the best they’ve ever heard.  If you’d like more information about any of that, visit my Class page.   Feel free to forward this to your guild’s Program Chair and let’s set something up for your guild!  Email me anytime.

I also present a FREE monthly lecture at The Sewing Studio in Maitland.  This happens on the 4th Saturday of each month, so if you’re in the area, come by and join us at the Tips, Tools & Techniques Club.

If you're looking to make quilts for hurricane victims in Puerto Rico, click here for more info.

If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.
Happy Quilting,
      Mary-Jeanine
PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

Amelia Island Quilt Guild All-day Workshop

Register with the Amelia Island Quilt Guild for a full day workshop with Linda Hahn, American Quilt Society (AQS) award winning quilter.  On Wednesday, November 15, 2017, the workshop, Rock that Block: Juicy Lucy, will allow quilters of all skill levels to explore how merely changing a color or rotating a patch a quarter turn can change the dynamics of the block.  Participants will learn how to divide a block into sections and calculate the size of the pieces using simple Quilter’s Math. She will share some quilts that can be made using one or a combination of the block that create awesome secondary pattern.  Ms. Hahn is the author of multiple award-winning books, including the AQS Best Seller New York Beauty Simplified.  She is a National Quilting Association Certified Teacher, has been a guest on Quilting Arts Television and has had her work published in several quilting magazines. She is part of the teaching faculty at the AQS Shows including Paducah and Lancaster. Workshop: November 15, 9:00-3:00; $35 members; $30 non-members; for information: aiquilters.com; space limited; pre-registration required: lchemke@comcast.net . QUILT DRIVE EXTENDED
SEW-MINI Thing is honored to announce that we have been asked to extend the Share a Spare Quilt Drive. As you may know, we have received a little local press coverage. The Executive Area Director of the Southwest Learning Community in Orlando Public Schools, was so moved that she reached out and contacted us to ask if quilts could be donated locally instead of being shipped to Puerto Rico. Why? Because over 1,500 children have been displaced from school in Puerto Rico and are now attending school in Florida. It has been on the national news about these precious kids who lives have been disrupted. We have been asked us to supply as many quilts as we can to give a warm love quilt hug. We have responded enthusiastically. So can you help us help the kids?

Here are the details:

  1. We are extending the drive through December 30.
  2. When you drop the quilt off in person you will still receive the 10% discount on all regularly priced fabrics in the store. If you are a club member 10% will be added to your club discount.
  3. These must be quilts. Minimum size 42" x X50". 60x60 or twin size is greatly appreciated.
  4. Clearly this is going to take great effort. If you have quilting friends who would like to make a donation please have them drop by the shop with the quilt or ship it to the store.

3820 N Hwy 19A, Mount Dora, FL 32757

Saturday we were on the local Orlando Fox 35 morning show to explain the Share a Spare Quilt Drive. Hope you can see how this has grown.

For those of you looking for updates follow our Facebook page where we can make them more regularly.

Every once in a while something comes along where your intent is to do something to help and it grows into something much greater. The Quilting Community is amazingly generous to the community at large and offers so many warm hugs through their quilts. You are awesome!

Thanks to everyone who has participated so far and those who will in the future.
We have also set up a “Donate” PAYPAL button on our website and are working with our vendors to purchase supplies at a substantial discount.
