Quilters:

I want to share with you a wonderful experience I had last weekend.  Diane Smith and I (and her patient husband, Frank) traveled to Naples to experience Ricky Tims, Quilter Extraordinaire.  This was the first time I took a quilt class with another guild.  Diane and I were not only wow'ed by Ricky and his talent, but the kindness of the Naples Quilt Guild and how they welcomed us, total strangers, into their midst.  And Ricky was impressed that we traveled 5 hours to take his classes.

The reason I relate this to you is that ANYone can do this.  If a workshop is posted in this newsletter, it is because the workshop seats have been opened up to the general public.  It is so interesting to see how other guilds conduct their meetings and classes, and it is a great way to make some new friends or visit with old friends, too.

I encourage each of you to extend yourself this year and visit another guild for a lecture, workshop or both.  It's a good thing.

I would also like to encourage groups who are sponsoring quilt shows to send me information on ENTERing quilts.  Your deadline, snail mail or web site for an entry form, etc. would be great.

REQUEST FOR QUILT ENTRIES

Howdy! I was wanting to make sure that quilters everywhere knew that the prospectus for the upcoming art quilt show "Roots of Racism: Ignorance and Fear" are available. This show is planned to travel for at least 2 years. We have secured Dr. Carolyn Mazloomi as our judge. The opening venue will be the Gallery at Vertigo Studios in Memphis. Mail date for slides is July 31st. If you'd like a prospectus please email me your postal address to rebelquilter@andrsn.com- Susan Lumsden

The Exhibition is a contest/ show of quilts made to raise awareness on the fact that racism is still an issue today and that cultural diversity is beneficial. the call to artists has gone out to all the major quilting and sewing and art related magazines as well as being promoted to the ethnic ones. The intent is to have a very diverse group of quilters enter quilts in the show. I expect that there will be a lot of media attention. Not simply because of the theme but because of the caliber of our judge as well.

We expect that following the first venue the show will be touring to various cities around the US. This part is still being pursued and nothing is finalized on that part. We will be contacting the Smithsonian in regards to their handling that portion. It will be traveling to museums not quilt

shows.

KIDS SEWING CAMP

Kids' Sew Fun Camp meets the FIVE THURSDAYS  in June at Keel's Sewing Center on Lee Road.   The beginners meet from 10 a.m. - noon; intermediates sew from 1-3 p.m.  If needed, machines can be provided.  Beginners start with learning to thread the machine and sewing an almost straight line and produce a wind sock and a tote bag.  Intermediates will make a wall

quilt/organizer with denim pockets, a purse, and a wearable top. Cost is $48, and the sewers get a camp tee shirt!!! Teacher is Margie Engel (margie@cfl.rr.com).  Class size is limited, so

enroll now by calling Keels, 407-644-8544, to save your space.

These classes are forerunners to our Kids Quilting Class which meets on Saturdays at Keels throughout the school year.

(Anyone who is willing to part with old denim pockets could drop them off at Keels or give them to Joan Sheppard at the Central Florida Quilt Guild Meetings!!!)
