Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #245
www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com
March 3, 2019

Quilting Friends,

If you’re ‘in the loop’, you may have heard already, but we have news of 4 different quilt shops closing in the greater central Florida area: Quilt Shop of Deland will close at the end of March, as will Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe in Trenton.  The Salty Needle in Cedar Key closes at the end of April. Rainbow’s End Quilt Shoppe in Dunedin closes within the year (article below).

I really hope we get some new shops in the area soon, because we love local and we love touching and feeling fabrics, taking classes and meeting up with like-minded quilters.  Internet shopping just doesn’t cut it!

If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.

Happy Quilting,
      Mary-Jeanine

PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

QUILT SHOW IN TRENTON

Anything Goes Quilters Celebrate North Central Florida

Trenton, Florida – From watching a Florida Gator’s ballgame or competition, to viewing a Harn Museum of Art exhibition, to tubing down the Ichetucknee River, or diving into a refreshing spring, North Central Florida has something for everyone.

At Trenton’s Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival, the “Anything Goes” quilting class celebrates things to see and do in North Central Florida with over fourteen beautiful quilts on display at Trenton’s historic depot on March 16th.  Festival visitors will be introduced, or reintroduced, to natural and cultural facets of this area.  People will often visit some of these iconic places regularly, but others they may not think about going to see.

The quilts demonstrate several different techniques.  One has innumerable strips of fabric painstakingly fitted together into a geometric design.  It is in Gator orange and blue for the university.  Another has animals of various sizes and shapes.  Its focus is the Santa Fe College teaching zoo.  A quilt of butterflies represents the UF Butterfly Garden and the various butterfly farms in the Hawthorne/Melrose area.

Lyn White, the class instructor, will show an entry originally made for the “Quilt Florida II” show at the UF National History Museum.  It depicts scenes of Paynes Prairie.  She explained that the squares of birds and alligators were copied onto fabric using original photographs taken by a nature photographer.  The joint class project features a manatee made of collaged floral fabrics.

The “Anything Goes” class, that also includes Stephanie Metts, Elayne Cassisi, Mary Gregory, Fran Anderson, and Pat Lopez, meets on Wednesdays at the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe in Trenton.

The thirteenth annual Trenton’s Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival, Florida’s only outdoor quilt show and sale, will be held Saturday, March 16, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the picturesque town of Trenton, Florida.  Located in north central Florida just 20 miles west of Gainesville, Trenton’s Main Street will be filled with crafts, antiques, and quilting displays.

The annual event is sponsored by the City of Trenton, Gilchrist County’s Tourist Development Council, the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe, Trenton ACE Hardware, plus other businesses and individuals from the tri-county area.

For more information about the festival, visit us on Facebook, go to the Festival website www.TrentonQuiltFestival.com, or contact the Suwannee Valley Quilt Shoppe, (352) 463-3842.

At the November 18 RFQG meeting, prizes will be awarded to challenge quilts in the following categories: 1. Best Representation of Mystery, 2. Most Creative, and 3. Best Use of Color or Black/White.

We have over 1,000 of bolts of Batiks. We will continue to have classes through year end. In February and March 2019 ALL regular priced fabric, on the bolt, is 35% off. ALL regular priced fat quarters are 35% off. ALL bundles, which are made by Rainbow's End Quilt Shoppe, and 35% off.

We expect to close our doors in June 2020 so we are giving our customers plenty of time to visit and reap the rewards of our current sales. We have customers from all over the world and we wanted to make sure they had one last time to visit us.

We are located in Dunedin, FL, a cute little city on the Gulf coast, 7 miles north of Clearwater and 7 miles south of Tarpon Springs. Dunedin has more little bars, breweries, restaurants than any city in the State of Florida and a lot of night life.
