Quilting Friends,

One of the most common questions I get as a quilting teacher is “Do you prewash your fabric”.  I’ll be honest, I don’t, but I do test reds and purples before using them, in case they bleed later.  (If they fail the test, I pre-wash them, of course.) However, I came upon this answer from Pepper Cory (If you don’t know that name, she is a treasured icon in our quilting world):

Like it or not, here's my take on pre-washing. 1) Why take the chance that your lovely fabric might, at a later date when it's sewn into a garment or quilt, shed some dye (run) or shrink oddly when the object is washed. Why? If you're the betting kind of person OK--I'm not. 2)I also hate the finish I find on most just-bought cottons. Am very sensitive to it and it makes my eyes water and the skin on my hands dries out quickly. I understand the need for the finish (enables the fabric to roll smoothly onto the bolt board) but I want it off my lovely fabric ASAP. 3) If the extra work bothers you--you don't have to pre-wash the whole length of what you've bought. Just tear off enough for the project at hand and wash that much. 4) No matter how expensive the fabric is, extra dye particles (those that have not bonded to the fibers) of intense colors can sometimes be hard to wash out in the manufacturing process. When we wash our fabric, only the extra dye particles float out and the fabric's still as bright as ever. I use Color Catchers in the wash. When I want something nice and smooth, I sprinkle and press it. I never steam it (can distort the weave) but love Best Press. PS-I design shot cottons and advise that you 1) clip the corners, 2) wash in a short cold load (make sure there's other items in the wash so it doesn't get strung out and beat up), 3) de-thread after washing and before drying  4) always 'fluff' the wet fabric before slinging into the dryer and 5) take the fabric pieces out when slightly still damp--the ideal time to press.

If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.

Happy Quilting,

PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

Free WW II Refugee Quilt Lecture

The Racing Fingers Quilt Guild is sponsoring “Passing on the Comfort: The War, The Quilts, and The Women Who Made a Difference” presented by Lynn Kaplanian-Buller at 6:30PM on April 15 at the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, 105 Amsden Road, Ormond Beach.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Lynn Kaplanian-Buller, from Holland, and her co-author An Keuning-Tichelaar wrote a book named “Passing on the Comfort: The War, The Quilts, and The Women Who Made a Difference”.  It is about An and her husband sheltering refugees during WWII in Holland, and receiving homemade quilts from Mennonite women in North America to give them comfort. Twenty years later, Lynn discovered the quilts, which reminded her of her Minnesota childhood, and the two women put together the story with the quilts at its core. The quilts and the two ladies toured both North America and Europe for several years telling their story and displaying some of the quilts at shows and museums. They were the keynote speakers at the Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Quilt Show in 2005, when the book was launched.  Lynn will be telling us the story and bringing a few of the old quilts to show.  She will also have some books for sale.

RFQG meets the third Monday of every month at 6:30PM at the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, 105 Amsden Road, Ormond Beach for a program and business meeting, and the second Thursday of each month in room 4 of the Ormond Beach Library at 9:30AM for quilting assistance.  All quilters and would-be quilters are welcome.
