Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #252

Quilting Friends,

I know it’s a busy season for everyone, school’s in and the lazy daze of summer is over.  If you get up early enough, there is a HINT of cool (I won’t say crisp) in the air, so we have no more excuses to get out for a walk, do we!

I’m dividing my time between church stuff (its Festival Time!) and sewing my little heart out.  I’m hoping fabric is coming in the mail today for a quilt sample I’m to make for Quilt Market in a few weeks.  Yep: start, finish, quilt and bind in 2 weeks.  I think I’m up for the task, and I’ll post a picture next month.

Till then, here’s another quilt I made over the summer in my little camper; it was actually a leader/ender quilt made in parallel with my Birthstone Gem quilt I showed you last month. I'm calling this one '6-Pack Blues'.

If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.
Happy Quilting,

PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

Free Stack n Whack Quilting Lecture in Ormond Beach

Racing Fingers Quilt Guild [RFQG] is sponsoring a free presentation, open to the public, on Stack-n-Whack on Monday, October 21, at 6:30PM at the Ormond Beach Presbyterian Church, 105 Amsden Road.   This is an easy way to create quilt blocks with unique kaleidoscope designs. Rather than finding and cutting each piece of fabric individually, a quilter can layer a number of large, identical print rectangles to make a stack.  This is then cut [whacked] into identical pieces of printed fabric to form the design.  Selection of fabric, amount of fabric needed, and the basic technique will be discussed.   info@racingfingersquiltguild.com .

Planning a Guild Bus or a Friends’ Road Trip early next year?

Consider visiting  a Quilt Show 2020 -- A Festival of Quilts, in Venice, Florida, which is celebrating 100 years of women’s accomplishments in its Showcase quilt, “Centennial Garden”.   Sponsored by the Venice Area Quilt Guild, the March 6 and 7, 2020 show is building upon its previous successes and adding some new twists and turns.  Guild members are working to create the best quilt show.  Ever.

Close to 200 quilts with a variety of themes --   traditional, modern, and avant garde;  in sizes from mini to oversized king;  and uses from mug rugs, wall hangings, and bed coverings will be displayed, with many being judged by well respected AQS judge, award winning quilter and national teacher, Molly Waddell.  Viewers are encouraged to vote for their favorites, as well as be inspired and learn from the great variety of on display.

“Centennial Garden”, the guild’s newest opprtunity quilt showcases 80 blocks created by life time guild member Mary Anne Rhodes following directions from Jennifer Chiaverini’s book, “Sylvia’s Bridal Sampler”.  Each block in the sampler quilt celebrates women’s accomplishments with traditional fabrics original from the 20’s and 30’s, and a few reproduction fabrics.  Mary Anne made the blocks more than 10 years ago, then stored them individually in vinyl sleeves with notes referencing the fabrics, their sources and pattern identity, along with the original book.   Guild members assembled the blocks, adding current fabrics for the sash, borders, binding and back.   Well respected long armer, Pat George, quilted the heirloom quality piece.

During the two-day show, nationally acclaimed appraiser, Brenda Grampsas,  will be on hand to give estimates of worth for personal and insurance information.  Additionally, handmade gifts will be available in the Boutique, the lastest and newest quilting supplies can be purchased in the Merchant Mall, Café Venice is offering a Pop Up café for sustenance, and, a long, overstocked Basket Walk, and gift raffles promise something for everyone.   Proceeds from a mini quilt raffle, with new hangings each day, will benefit the South County Food Pantry.

The Quilt Show, on Friday, March 6, 2020, from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday, March 7, 2020, from 9 am – 4 pm,  will in the bright, airy, air conditioned Venice Community Center, 326 South Nokomis, Av., Venice, which is handicapped accessible and offers free parking.

Buses are welcome and advance ticket sales can earn a discounted entrance fee.  Tickets for “Centennial Garden”, as well as additional details are available by visiting vaqg.org or by email Quiltshow2020@vaqg.org.
