Quilting Friends,

Since I’ve become a Gem Affiliate (certified to teach the quilts and patterns from MJ Kinman, Textile Artist), I’ve been diving deep into Birthstone Blocks and other gem patterns.  And now MJ has introduced her new line of fabric, “Jewel Box”.  Here’s a picture of her booth at Houston Quilt Market

and then a picture of the quilt I created for her display.  I had so much fun with this fabric, and this in the middle of my busy October get-ready-for-festival season:

Here’s a link to my new website featuring my birthstone workshops.  I’d love to come to your guild to teach these amazing blocks!!

(In case you’re wondering, yes, we both go by ‘MJ’, but somehow it works out!)

If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.
Happy Quilting,
      Mary-Jeanine

PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

HOLLIS CHATELAIN LECTURE IN TAMPA BAY

Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild, Inc. presents Hollis Chatelain lecture titled  "The Emotion of Color in Art", Wednesday, November 20, 7-9 pm. At Unity Church of St Petersburg, 6168 1st Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL 33710. Cost $15.00 payable on our website   Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild - Home  or at the door.

Hollis states that since 2000 her work has progressed into monochromatic. “Working in just one color has been an interesting and exciting adventure. Art can carry a strong emotion and specific colors reinforce these emotions. I will be speaking about the evolution of color, the significance of colors in our society, and how we can use different colors to emphasize what we want to say in our art.”

Patricia Grice
President Tampa Bay Surface Design Guild, Inc.

SNOWBALL EXPRESS IN ORLANDO

Snowball Express is an event of the Gary Sinise Foundation that provides a holiday vacation for the families of active military who have died since 9/11/2001.   Project Linus gets involved each year to provide these “Gold Star” children with their own quilt or blanket of their choice.

VOLUNTEER SEWERS NEEDED!  Sewists are needed to sew patches on leather vests for the Gold Star Children.  They are also in need of non-sewers to help in the arcade and oversee the kids in other activities.  Everyone who participates will need to undergo a background check.  If you want to participate, please contact Lynn or Cindy (see below) for a link.

Sewers are needed on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday (Dec 8-10) between the hours of 8am and 5pm.  Volunteers can choose to work 3 days, 3 hours, or anything in between. All sewing machines and supplies will be provided.

The photos below will give you an idea of the process.  Each kid pocks out the patches he or she wants sewn on their vest from the tubs of patches.  Some kids change them out or add more to vests they received last year.
