Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #257

Quilting Friends,

(click to enlarge)  A couple of fun finishes for the month of February.  The name of the pattern is ‘Have a Heart’ and it’s a great way to use up scraps. And if you don’t happen to follow the pattern exactly (slowly raising hand), no one will know!  Also a great quilt for a wedding gift or a memory quilt, using strips from clothing.

From Stacy McEachern:

Dear Florida Quilters,  Mary-Jeanine has been kind enough to let me share an idea with you that I hope will joyfully tug at your heartstrings like it has for me.

The idea and my hope is to honor the hearts and hands of quilters and seamstresses who have come before – our Moms and grandmothers, aunts and sisters, friends and mentors. Let us honor their quiet wisdom...their strength and courage...their humor and humility...and their grounding lessons that fed our souls and balanced our lives. And without always even knowing, they taught us the art of living while we were learning the art of quilting.

Like a quilters version of what Tom Brokaw so lovingly did in his “Greatest Generation” book that honored World War II veterans, I hope to gather stories layered with those “to-live-by” phrases, cherished conversations and timeless views of life. Stories of how they patched us through the hard times and truly made us better people by simply having these humble heroes in our lives.

In this month, when we celebrate International Women’s Day on the 8th and National Quilting Day on the 21st, I invite all of you -- the very story-keepers of those dear story-tellers -- to join with me in celebrating and preserving the voices of their hands.

Please write me at voicesoftheirhands@yahoo.com with your story or just your interest in learning more. This is a beginning and a work in progress, so let me hear from you.

If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.

Happy Quilting,

      Mary-Jeanine

PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

MORE INFO ON ESTERO QUILT SHOW

For the Quilt Show in Estero (between Ft. Myers and Naples),   March 14-15 from 8-1 each day.  Contact momc318@gmail.com

Featured Quilter:  Richard Lambert.   Richard honors our veterans by making them quilts.  He expanded his wife's sewing room to make room for him because he buys more at quilt shops than his wife!  Hear him talk about his passion for quilting.

The venue is a restored 1900's religious commune deeded to the Koreshan State Park.  Eleven buildings, restored and open to the public complete the idyllic setting for this Quilt, Craft, and Antique Engine Show.  The historic quilts come out only once a year and are on displayed in the restored Victorian home.

Demonstrations include modern quilting techniques on antique sewing machines,  free motion quilting on a Featherweight, plus information on the care and preservation of quilts.  Vendors present.
