Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #26

May 1, 2000

Since my last newsletter, my husband and I spent a glorious four days (sans kidlets!) in Monterey and San Francisco, California.  I was able to stop by one fabric store, Britex, and made it worth my while /g/ !  Then we drove over to Oakland to see the "Women of Taste" exhibit.  It was well worth the drive (less than an hour).  "Women of Taste" is a selection of 50 contemporary quilts created by quilt artists in collaboration with renowned women chefs, (most notably Yvonne Porcella with Julia Childs).  Anyway, it was a spectacular exhibit.  Even hubby was captivated.  It will be at the Oakland Museum until July 23, 2000.

On another note, If you have any experience with the new Free-Hander tabletop quilting machine, could you please drop me a line? mji@cfl.rr.com  Thanks in advance.

OK, all you quilt show chairwomen out there, how 'bout sending me your info about entering quilts in your quilt show?  For example, deadlines, where to send a SASE for entry form etc.  If you want more quilts hanging in your show, then you need to get the entry forms out.  Let me help you do that.

And finally, this is SO off-topic, but it’s a timesaver, so maybe it'll give you more time to quilt!  I recently purchased the new Swiffer brand dust mop.  It comes with those green boxes of dusting rags.  Boy, do they work!  I did five (count-em…5!) sets of floor to ceiling blinds in less than 30 minutes.  No streaks, no water, no flying dust, no sneezing, and no rags to wash afterward.  I'm sold.  Dusts everything right the first time.  There are several brands, I'm sure they all work equally well.

One of those little things that makes life even better.  ;)

HAWAIIAN QUILTING WORKSHOP

Florida Folk Festival, White Springs

Saturday, May 27, 2000

9am-12pm

The Florida Folk Festival will offer a quilting workshop entitled "Breadfruit-The Beginning," featuring master quilter Ginger Lavoie. This class provides an excellent starting point for anyone interested in Hawaiian quilting, whether a beginning or advanced quilter.  Not only is the breadfruit design the traditional beginning of quilt instruction in Hawaii, but sewing the breadfruit also ensures a fruitful life, abundant wisdom, and that Hawaiian quilting will become a part of your life.

Quilting was brought to Hawaii by American missionaries, but Hawaiian women quickly adapted the tradition to their aesthetics and worldview.  Some believe that a woman derived the idea for the first design from seeing the shadow a breadfruit tree cast on her plain quilt base. Hawaiian quilters appliqué a design onto a base, and connected layers of fabric with hundreds of rows of quilted stitching flowing from the center like waves.  Quilt designs are inspired by nature, but have a personal and symbolic significance known only to their maker.  Each quilter develops unique patterns by folding a large piece of paper into eighths, then sketching the design from the center.

Ms. Lavoie lived for 28 years on the island of Moloka'i.  During that time she studied with an accomplished native quilter and became an excellent quilter in her own right.  She has been featured in many exhibitions and publications, teaches quilting, and   exhibits her quilts monthly at Disney's Polynesian Resort.  Ms. Lavoie was selected as a master artist in the Florida Folklife Apprenticeship Program for 1999-2000.

The workshop will be offered Saturday, May 27 from 9am to 12pm.  The workshop fee of $50 includes a kit that contains the materials necessary to quilt a 20"x 20" breadfruit design [prewashed and cut fabric, batting, etc.].  The kit normally retails for $30.00 to $46.00. To be assured a place, registration fees should be sent to Ginger Lavoie, 2912 Evans Drive,

Kissimmee, FL 34758.  Quilters may also sign up for any available spaces at the festival workshop.

Workshop participants must pay festival admission in order to attend the workshop, which is in the Museum Studio I in the northwest wing of the Museum.  Florida Folk Festival admission for adults is as follows: $10/day advance ticket, $12/day at the gate.  For further information about buying tickets, discounts for weekend festival attendance, special prices for children and families, and other festival information, please call the Museum of Florida History at (850) 488-1484.
