Quilting Friends,

I love to see all the new Christmas fabrics on the shelves at my local quilt shop.  Christmas is one stash I don’t have, so I get to buy what I need to make a few new Christmas quilts each year for classes and lectures.  This is one I finished a few weeks ago.  My boss gave me a 20-strip jelly roll of Moda Grunge, and this Christmas cardinal fabric was perfect as the background.  I used MSQC’s “Breezy Windmills” for the pattern.

Please read to the bottom of this newsletter for information on how to donate finished quilts to help those who are starting over with nothing at all.  If you know of other organizations that are gifting quilts to disaster survivors, please let me know.

You may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state.  Give it a look-see.

Happy Quilting,

      Mary-Jeanine

PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

Wednesday, November 03, 2021, 10:00 AM @ Zoom - Luke Haynes - Designer and Quilting Artist
Event URLhttps://suncoastquiltingcircle.org/event-4299395

Subverting the traditional quilting form by integrating modern concepts, his art transforms the comfortably familiar into the visually evocative. Luke Haynes was born and raised across the American South. With a formal training in art and architecture at Cooper Union, New York, Haynes continues to experiment with quilting art while exploring art and architecture across the globe. A chance encounter with a box of fabric remnants sparked Mr. Haynes' imagination. His first quilt, measuring 7′ x 10′, led him through years of experimentation and improvements over the years that he has been quilting.  Further honing his style, Mr. Haynes developed a system to piece manageable parts into a larger whole, applying a modern design sense to a familiar process. He uses reclaimed materials from the communities he works with in his projects to speak with the textile language of the area. Non-members are welcome to register:  Tickets are $10.

QUILT SHOW IN PALATKA

From Miss D’s Quilt Shop:

It is hard to believe that we began our journey 8 years ago. But, here we are, preparing for our 8th Annual Quilts by the River, October 1st & 2nd.

Our quilt show is known for being an intimate affair, meaning we have between 65 and 85 quilts on display just enough to truly appreciate. We are joined by vendors, quilt guilds, in-store specials with your wrist band, and special offers on our Baby Lock, Viking and Handi Quilter machines.

It is 2 days of enjoying inspiring quilts, appreciating quilter's talents, checking out vendors and visiting with friends you have not seen in a while. Who could ask for a better way to spend 2 days in October?

Our Best of Show will receive $200. Depending on the number of quilts received we will award the remaining categories accordingly. We have already received some unusual and interesting quilts. So come join us as a participant in our show.

This year we have made it even easier for you to participate in our show. We have posted the application form in jpeg format on Facebook, Instagram and our website. By clicking on one of those links, you can access our website, download the application and pay your entrance fee ($10) all from the same page. Just print your receipt and place it in with your quilt when you bring it or mail it to the shop.

Entrance fee for the show is still just $5.00. For those who submit a quilt(s), you will receive one ticket for free entrance.

Our vendors this year, so far include:

Please email MissD@missdsquilts.com if you have any questions about the above information.

QUILTS FOR FIRE SURVIVORS

So far, I [your friendly editor] have found two organizations that are distributing quilts to fire survivors in California (I love the fact that they call themselves SURVIVORS, not VICTIMS).  The first one is out of Napa Valley, and they are still working on an address to which to send the quilts. In the meantime, join this group on Facebook to stay informed: https://www.facebook.com/groups/happinesswarmquilt

AND ANOTHER ORGANIZATION

WE CARE will be coordinating with organizations from Placer and Nevada Counties to provide quilts for the 142 homes destroyed by the River Fire.

The areas I’m hoping we can help include:

SALT FIRE    (Shasta County)    41 structures

TAMARACK FIRE   (Alpine County)      25 structures

RIVER FIRE    (Nevada and Placer Counties)   88 structures

DIXIE/FLY FIRE      (Butte, Lassen, Plumas, Tehama Counties)     545 structures      21% contained

BECKWOURTH COMPLEX FIRE      (Plumas County)      148 structures

The 500+ quilts I have ready to go look like a small number when put in perspective.

Please, once again, one completed quilt is more helpful than several tops.  A good size is 42ish x 52ish, but any size will work.

Kathy

I know that Kathy is extremely grateful to the support she has received from the quilting community. If you have questions, you can contact Kathy at kabrabit@yahoo.com. You can send finished quilts to:

Bed Quilts Needed

An agency in San Jose is working hard to resettle

1000 Afghan refugees in the Bay Area.

The Community Quilt Project is collecting

bed quilts for adults...twin, full or queen sizes are needed most.

If you have a new quilt, please consider donating it

to families who have left everything behind.

We have plenty of baby and tweens in the quilt bank,

but as always, will happily accept those too.

Quilts can be dropped on Carolyn Weil's porch

or at New Pieces Quilt Shop on Gilman St. in Berkeley.

Email Carolyn at ebhq.ddcqp@gmail for her address.

Thanks so much for any help you can offer.
