Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #280

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

April 8, 2022

Quilting Friends,

If you are wanting to donate a quilt or two to Ukrainian refuges, skip to the bottom of this newsletter.

This newsletter is a few days later than I like it to be, but I was busy this week at The Villages presenting a guild program and then an all day class on my Birthstone Gems.  So much fun!  Please consider booking this great class to make these stunning gemstones out of FABRIC.  The first time I saw these Gems from MJ Kinman my jaw dropped and I told myself “you may not start another project until you’ve made one of these gems”….I ended up becoming a Certified Gem Affiliate and able to teach these patterns anywhere. The blocks are not hard at all, you just have to pay attention. Send me an email, lets chat!

SAQA EXHIBIT IN ST PETE, FT MYERS & MARCO ISLAND

"The Artists Question.... answered in Fiber"

Premiere Venue: Florida CraftArt Gallery, St. Petersburg FL, April 25 - May 14, 2022

Additional Venues: Alliance for the Arts, Ft. Myers FL, June 3 - 7, 2022
Eastern Shore Art Center, Fairhope AL, September 2 - October 29, 2022
Marco Island Center for the Arts, Marco Island, FL, May 8 - June 30, 2023
Jurors: Zak Foster
Exhibition Coordinator: Diane Powers Harris

A regional Exhibit of
Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA)
Works submitted for jurying by
SAQA-member artists in Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.

The exhibition premise is that creating a work of art begins with a question. The artist might ask: What idea is important for me to communicate? What concept do I want to explore? What emotions do I want to experience and evoke in the viewer?
Juror Zak Foster, quilt artist from New York City, selected 29 works from 74 entries by 52 artists. In his statement, Foster explained, “the pieces selected for this exhibit are honest and heartfelt questions artists are exploring in order to make sense of this life: how do we deal with the world changing so quickly around us? From California wildfires to the loss of a loved one, our life can change in a moment, often leaving more questions than answers.” He chose work “based on a few criteria: how well they reflected the brief, the nature of the question being investigated, and the manner in which artists explored fabric, color, line, form, and pattern in search of an answer.”

The quilts in this exhibit reflect the varied traditions and artmaking methods characteristic of contemporary art quilters. Included are original surface design on fabric, hand stitching, machine stitching, hand embellishments, applique, and digital printing. Some works are representational. Some are abstract.

Studio Art Quilt Associates, Inc. (SAQA) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote the art quilt: “a creative visual work that is layered and stitched or that references this form of stitched layered structure.” The vision of SAQA is that the art quilt is universally respected as a fine art medium.
