Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #35

January 8, 2001

Quilting Friends,

---  As you will see in the Calendar, Martha Pullen’s Sewing Market is coming to Orlando January 25-27.  I will be there on Thursday as an “Angel” (I’ll help at a few seminars) and I invite you to do the same.  Being an Angel allows you to get into the show for free for one day ($15 otherwise).  The seminars are free, and the vendor mall is awesome.  To get more information or volunteer, call Hilda at the Martha Pullen Company.  Her # is 1-800-547-4176  x 106.  Also check out http://www.marthapullen.com/

---  In the last newsletter, there was a mistake.  I recently learned the website address for the International Quilt Study Center has been changed. Try http://quiltstudy.unl.edu. Go to education then to courses/workshops

---  For those of you (like me!) who keep forgetting to send in your registration for the SSQA Symposium, its not too late, and Andi and Art would love to see all the classes full.  Here is the info again:

Teachers are Karen Combs, Susanne McCoy, Jo Morton, Cindy Blackberg, Ellen Gordon and Jan Wildman. Classes are a variety of hand or machine, traditional or contemporary, project or technique. Remember also that you are responsible for making your own room reservations at the Holiday Inn of Altamonte Springs (407) 862-4455 by February 15 to get the SSQA rate (mention us!) of $75.90/night (includes tax). For information and a registration form, go to www.ssqa.org. Non-members of SSQA may register after January 17. The registration deadline is February 15. For a registration package, send an LSASE with two first class stamps to Andi Reynolds, 1117 Albritton Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32301-3265.

---  Reminder! We will have a Raucous Auction to raise money for the next symposium. Please be generous! Mary-Jeanine Ibarguen is keeping a tally of what is being donated - mji@cfl.rr.com - so please let her know ASAP. And bring money so we can get some great bids!

RUTH McDOWELL LECTURE

Ruth McDowell is coming to Orlando as part of the Florida Cabin Fever Quilt Guild's 2001 Quilt Show.  She will be lecturing Friday evening 1/26/01 at the Central Florida Fairgrounds at 6PM on "Progressions and Diversions: My Development as a Quilter." She will present a slide lecture highlighting her work from her earliest traditional quilts to her current projects.  Cost for non guild members is $3.00.  Spaces are available for her Saturday 1/27/01 workshop: Penrose and Company.  Students will learn new ways to use simple geometric shapes to create quilts based on the tiling patterns of Robert Penrose.  When assembled, these quilts, though easy to piece have an overall random and complex appearance.  Limited spaces are available for her Sunday workshop: Planning for Piecing.  Ruth will show some tricks to enhance pieced designs.  Both traditional and original blocks will be covered. The workshops will be held in the Social Hall at the fairgrounds.  Cost for non members is $40.00.  Contact Kathleen Foster @ rfoster5@ix.netcom.com

QUILT SHOW IN DeBARY

Nimble Fingers Quilters' Guild presents "Quilts in the Mansion".  The quilt show will be held March 31 and April 1, 2001.  This quilt show is being held at newly renovated, historic DeBary Mansion in DeBary Florida.  We will have a donation quilt named 'Redwork Garden' which is a redwork-Irish Chain combination.  We will also have vendors, a silent auction of miniature/small quilts and of course, a boutique.  DeBary Mansion has been the recipient of Nimble Fingers outreach for many years.  For the past several years we have had silent auctions at DeBary Mansion during their spring festivals.  We have donated 40% of monies of each of these auctions back to DeBary Mansion for their use in restoring the mansion.  For more information, please contact Dottie at express7@bitstorm.net or SASE to Nimble Fingers Quilters' Guild, 813 Goldcoast Drive, Deltona, FL  32725.
