CHARITY QUILTING

"Angel Quilts" is a new chapter of "Afghans for Angels", an organization made up completely of volunteers who make and deliver baby blankets to local hospitals to give to parents who have suffered the loss of their infant through miscarriage, still birth or infant death.

We would like to adopt one or two Gainesville hospitals to service and provide with handmade baby quilts or afghans to be used during these sorrowful times.  The quilts or afghans are to be placed lovingly around these infant angels when they are held by their families for the brief time in which bittersweet hellos and sad good-byes are said.  The parents are then allowed to keep the quilt as a token of remembrance of their baby, as just having something soft to hold that belonged solely to their child is often comforting.

We will be needing help in making these baby quilts, afghans, or blankets and hope that other Florida quilters will find this project as worthwhile as we did.  For more information on how to donate quilts or supplies locally, please visit our web site at http://www.AngelAfghans.homestead.com/AngelQuilts.html or nationally at the headquarters of "Afghans for Angels" at http://www.angelfire.com/ia2/AforApage2/index.html

FREE COLOR WORKSHOP

As a "thank you" to all their quilting customers, Thimbles and Thread, of Merritt Island, is offering "Adventures in Color", a FREE color workshop on August, 18th, from 10-1.

In this workshop you will learn how to use color to make your quilts sing! You will learn basic color theory, while viewing slides, quilts, and pictures.  You'll focus on easy to use concepts, with emphasis on application.  Using magazine ads, fabric, and other materials, you'll make collages and complete workbook exercises for each concept.  These will act as visual aids for your own color textbook, which you'll finish in class.  This class is fun and interactive.

You'll be lead on your color adventures by Ellen Lindner.  Ellen is an enthusiastic teacher who loves to share the excitement of quilt design with her students.  Her quilts have won both local and national awards, and she was recently included in the "Outstanding Florida Quilters" exhibit, in Orlando.

Your only admission fee is a fat quarter, which will later be included in the door prizes.   We'll take a short break, so pack a light lunch or snack.  Contact Thimbles and Thread to sign up and to get the supply list.  <quilts1999@aol.com>, (321) 456-5685.

HUNTING FOR….

In March of 2000 I attended a Quilt Show in Melbourne, FL.  A vender was selling thread on 6000 yd. cones.  It is wonderful thread and I am almost out, and need to find more.  It is Amiral Plus mercerized cotton, put out by Coats.   Naturaline color.  If a vender out there has this, I would appreciate hearing from them.

INTERNET SHOP HOP

Say "sewing machine" to Sue Poe of Fresno, CA, and watch her eyes light up, because she just won one in FabShop Hop3 -- an internet shop hop featuring hundreds of independent fabric and quilt shops. In AUGUST, new lucky winners may join Sue and Paula Ward of Benbrook, TX as grand prize winners of the FabShop Hop.

The E-FabShop Hop1, running from August 1-31, is sponsored by The Fabric Shop Network Inc. (www.fabshopnet.com), an association of independent fabric and quilt shops in the U.S. and Canada.

Shoppers, known as "hoppers", go from web site to web site looking for "The Bunny" which can be found at each site.  By clicking on the bunny they can register for prize drawings.  Hoppers who visit and register at all shops are eligible for the Grand Prize drawing for a sewing machine

or serger donated by a major manufacturer. Another hundred or so win first and second prizes of fabric, notions and books donated by manufacturers and publishers.

Nearly 30,000 home sewers and quilters participated in the April Hop and organizers are expecting the August Hop to be even larger.  Participants can register now for the E-FabShop Hop1 at www.fabshophop.com.  Just before the Hop starts, participants will receive an email reminder and then will have 31 days to visit the shops on the web.  During the Hop registered consumers will receive FabShopHopNews with tips for success, technical information, and notices of special sales and promotions at participating shops.  1, 2, 3, 4, HOP!
