Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #44

July 21, 2001

Quilting Friends,

The flower girl’s dress is finished, the pants are hemmed, the shoes are broken in, and we’re off to Columbus, Ohio for my sister-in-law’s wedding.  Thought I’d get one more newsletter out now, since school starts up soon after we get home.  (And yes, the happy couple is getting a quilt from me!)

Check out a neat website: www.sulky.com.  Lots of free projects from their various publications.

This is a message from Bethany Reynolds:

Last month I taped a segment for "Quilt Central," a new quilting program available to PBS affiliates beginning this fall. The hosts for this new  show are Donna Wilder, familiar to many as the host of "Sew Creative,"  and Jane Donaldson, a machine quilting expert. The series will focus on decorating with quilts (move over, Martha!). The producers purchased a lovely home in Paducah, KY and decorated each room beautifully with quilts. In addition to the decorating tips, each show will include quilting segments (long-arm quilting and machine embroidery will be covered, along with more traditional topics) and featured guests. I was surprised and honored to be the featured guest for the premier episode. I demonstrated the fan quilt design from my new book. The taping went smoothly despite thunderstorms and power outages that kept everybody on their toes. The fan quilt sample I pieced for the show's living room will be used throughout the season.

This looks like an exciting new series. Contact your local PBS affiliate for show dates and times in your area. And if they aren't planning to carry it yet, let them know your interest. Most PBS stations do listen to their viewers, so let's make sure they know there are quilters in the audience!

And now back to the editor:  Please consider contacting your local PBS station to tell them you’d like to see this show on their station.  Go to www.pbs.org and type your zip code in the Station Finder Box in the upper right corner.  Follow the link to your local station(s) and their contact email.  Please let them know you are interesting in their carrying this new quilting program, “Quilt Central”.  Thank You.

Enesco Group, Inc. is sponsoring the national Precious Moments Pink Ribbon Quilt Collection to honor people whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.  Enesco hopes to collect 2002 hand- crafted cotton quilt squares, which will be assembled into a series of king-sized quilts and donated to the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations (NABCO) and other breast cancer organizations.

To participate in the Pink Ribbon Quilt Collection, create a handcrafted 12-inch by 12-inch cotton quilt square portraying a special moment or meaning, or honoring a loved one who has had breast cancer.  (Please leave a one- to two-inch seam allowance on all sides.)  Quilt squares can be sewn, appliqued, drawn, silk screened, glued and/or colored.  Quilt squares will be accepted through December 15, 2001.  They can be mailed to:

A challenge is a game with rules. The rules change from one challenge to the next; they may include using certain fabrics, sizes, different techniques; but the game is the same. Make your quilt block a treasure created especially by you within the specified parameters. This block challenge is being held in conjunction with WPQG’s 7th biennial

1. Send $3 fee for each entry to WPQG c/o Naomi Shoemaker 6848 Nebraska Ave

given two 9x12 pieces of fabric to create a quilt block using the theme “A Touch of Spring”, and you will be given a 5x6 piece of fabric to create a label.

2. You should use a recognizable amount of both challenge fabrics in your block. You may add as many additional fabrics as you wish. Please select 100% cotton fabrics.

3. All finished blocks should measure 12 inch square (this includes ¼ seam allowance).

4. Block may be hand sewn or machine done. It may be pieced, applique, or mixed technique. If it is mixed, please decide which category best fits your block.

5. Only 1 block allowed per $3 entry fee and registration form.

You need not be present to win, but please come; it’s a great show!
