Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #52

May 4, 2002

Quilting Friends,

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman. It takes less than a minute to go to their site & click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).  Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate a mammogram in exchange for advertising. Here's the website.  Please pass it along to your friends.    http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/

Do you remember my mentioning the new PBS Quilting Show, “Quilt Central” ??  I asked everyone in the Daytona Beach/Orlando corridor to ask WCEU to carry the show.  Well, squeaky wheels get oiled, and they’ve put the show on Channel 15, Tuesdays,  at 12:30pm.  Enjoy!

I have a 3-D appliqué technique that I call Applibond. My website is www.petalplay.com. Log on to see what I do.  Next Jan 31-Feb1, I will be vending at the Villages quilt guild show in Lady Lake Fl. I would like to connect with some guilds in that area to lecture/teach while I am there. Do you have any contact info that you could share with me? REQUEST FOR BLOCKS

CASA is a non-profit agency, which recruits, trains and supervises volunteer advocates who speak on behalf of an abused and neglected child.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) are appointed by a judge to become the powerful voice of the child in court.

All children have the right to a home with loving people who care for them.  But each year in this country millions of children are abused, neglected or abandoned by their families.  Our 430,000 children are removed from their homes and placed in foster care or some other form of state custody.  Eventually, they end up in court; their only crime is that of being a victim.  It is up to  a judge to decide their future.  Should they remain in foster care?  Should they be reunited with their parents?  Should they be adopted?  During this process, many children can become victims a second time, lost in an overburdened child welfare system.  Children in Louisiana spend an average of over 39 months in foster care, but when they have a CASA advocate, they spend  far less time, often finding a safe and permanent home within a year.

Here is how YOU can help:

Each year we raffle a “Safe and Permanent Home” quilt.  The quilt consists of square blocks depicting a “home”   Since all homes are different, these blocks may be any color or style, pieced or appliqued.  Please use 100% cotton materials and make an accurate 12.5 by 12.5 inch block.

Please sign the block with your name or the name of your club and mail or deliver the quilt square to CASA Services, Inc., 1504 West Church Street, Hammond, LA 70403 by June 30, 2002.  The quilt will be assembled and quilted by volunteers and displayed to the public as raffle tickets are sold.  The drawing for the quilt will be on the third Sunday in December, 2002.

Please also let us know the amount of time you spent on your square so we can record the hours of community service for our records, and feel free to donate more than one square if you wish.  This year, we also plan a wall hanging and a pillow as second and third prizes.

Thank you so much for helping abused and neglected children in your community.

Sincerely,

Faye Murray                                                   Lydia Palisi
