Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #62

March 2nd, 2003

Quilting Friends,

I had a chance to break away and see the Ocala Quilt Show last weekend.  What a delightful display of quilts and friendly vendors!  I encourage you to go to one new show each season… and our season is not quite over yet!  We still have a few good shows coming up in March.

A nice quilter named Sandra Burns started an online quilt guild called Sunshine Quilters.  Their goal is for each member to make one quilt block per month to be sent to rotating members. The member for that month puts the blocks together to be sent to the childrens’ charity of their choice.  The webpage address is http://sunshinequilters.bigswamp.org/

Did you know that Florida has a State Guild?  We’ve been in existence for over five years now, and have a plethora of activities for quilting in the sunshine: quarterly meetings, bi-annual symposiums, a great newsletter and website, and a chance to meet quilters from all over our great state.  Some of the upcoming activities are listed just after the Calendar Section, below.

Please know that all SSQA events are open to non-members as well, so you have no excuse but to check us out!

SSQA HOSTS TWO EVENTS

The “Sunshine State Quilters Association” (SSQA) is meeting this Saturday (March 8th) in Jacksonville from 9am-3pm. Non-members are welcome, too, and you can join while you're there!  Three-hour classes include Magic Triangles (machine pieced), 3-D Applique Wreath (handwork, complete kit $10), and How to Give a Presentation for Your Guild. The after lunch program is Ira Inman speaking on "A Quilter's Creativity".  $20 (member price) buys you a class, a lunch and a lecture.  What a deal!  Contact Sunnie Malesky at sunsky@attbi.com    Check out www.ssqa.org/0303meet.htm for more info.

Speaking of SSQA, the Symposium is around the corner…have you been postponing sending in your registration?  Here is the info again in case you missed it the first time.  What a great opportunity to learn some new quilting skills and get away from the hustle and bustle we call a life.

JURIED QUILT CONTEST

QUILTS HALL OF FAME ANNOUNCES 2003 JURIED QUILT CONTEST. Interested quilters are invited to submit quilts for the 2003 juried Celebration Show to take place July 17-20 during the induction of Georgia Bonesteel of Flat Rock, North Carolina, into The Quilters Hall of Fame. Help us salute the contributions of gardens that have brought such pleasure to so many through the centuries by entering your quilt! Our theme "In the Garden" is not constrained by the use of 'flowers only" designs, but must be related in some way to gardens. Use your imagination to learn what hidden unexpected design themes might be discovered in a garden. Guidelines: May be hand or machine quilted; pieced, appliquéd, or embroidered; all sizes eligible; must have a 4" hanging sleeve sewn to the short side of the quilt; color photographs (preferred) or slides of a close-up and full view to accompany registration form; form and photos must be received by May 15, 2003; Entrants will be notified of acceptance of their quilts by June 15, 2003. Prizes: First Prize $750.00; Second Prize $500.00; People's Choice $250.00.  QHF Board member Karen Alexander of Reston, VA, has donated the People's Choice prize money this year in memory of her mother, Betty Peebles Biedler of Gladewater, TX. For entry forms write to Sue Munn, QHF Contest Chair, P.O. Box 681, Marion, IN 46952-0681.

Could you do us a favor by passing this Press Release on to as many of your quilt friends as possible?

Thank you and Good luck!
