Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #69

December 12, 2003

Quilting Friends,

Happy happy Holidays from me to you.  I wish for you more time to enjoy your quilting pursuits.  Personally, we’re driving up to St. Augustine after Christmas to spend a week with my side of the family.  I’ll be bringing my scrap basket and hope to finish a string quilt as well as get a few of the nieces and nephews excited about making their own quilt.   Can’t wait!

I look forward to meeting many of you at our guild’s quilt show: Quilt Magic 2004.  The dates are January 23 and 24th in Orlando.  Check www.CFQG.com for more info or read below for the latest info.  We welcome buses and will help your group feel at home.

For those of you who like to enter quilts into judged shows, I invite you get your entry registration form in to our Registration Chairperson by December 20th.   Again see the website to download a entry registration form.

CALL FOR QUILTS

New Smyrna Beach…“Considering Quilts 2004, Fiber Artists Explore the Quilt Form” juried exhibition of small art quilts* (limits: 24" horizontal, 6' freestanding, wearables), Atlantic Center for the Arts at Harris House, April 3 May 15, 2004. Merchant’s Market, May 1-2.

*Quilts defined as three layers stitched together. (No quilt police to define those layers or stitching!)

Because of the overwhelming response to Considering Quilts 2003, we have expanded the exhibition to six weeks, added more workshops, and at the request of our audience, we’ve added a Merchants Market on the first weekend in May.

Artists from the U.S., Canada, Australia, Belgium, England, Japan and Africa have responded to our call for fiber artists to enter Considering Quilts 2004: Fiber Artists Explore the Quilt Form.  Forty works will be selected in January from the applicants.  The fiber art will include small wall hangings, wearables and freestanding sculptures.

Along with the exhibition in the Harris House gallery, we are presenting lectures and workshops by nationally known fiber artists and the Merchants Market.

With our expanded audience at Considering Quilts 2004, Atlantic Center for the Arts at Harris House hopes to present products and materials to visitors who usually travel to Orlando and Jacksonville for many of their fiber art supplies or have to resort to the internet. We expect to bring visitors from those cities to our Merchants Market, located in the Brannon Center.

April 21-25, On the Far Side of Quilting is our Atlantic Center for the Arts residency retreat for fiber artists who will work with internationally known instructors Maxine Farkas and Pamela Allen (website). Students will arrive on Wednesday, April 21 at the Atlantic Center and depart Sunday night or Monday morning. They may choose between Art Quilt 101 by Farkas, as published in Quilting Arts magazine, or My Quilt, My Rules! by Allen.

May 14 – 15, Its all About the Surface features Rayna Gillman from New Jersey and Vikki Pignatelli from Ohio.  Gilliam will play with surface designs and Pignatelli will present Crazy about Curves

For application or information about related classes, lectures and retreats, contact Mary McBride at 386-423-1753 or by email mmcbride@atlanticcenterforthearts.org.

February 18 - 22, 2004

THE SINGING QUILTER

This is to introduce Cathy Miller, The Singing Quilter.  We are currently booking a tour to guilds in Florida in the spring of 2005, and wonder if you might inquire in your newsletter whether there would be any quilt guilds that would be interested in our program.

Cathy and I perform a one-hour (+/-) musical tour of quilting which includes songs and stories about quilting, and a few quilts to show.  The program has been receiving rave reviews from quilters everywhere, and we would like to be able to do show for guilds in Florida.  At the

present time we have a booking for the Naples Quilt Guild on 17th February, and have most of the rest of that month available.

More information about the project can be found on the website: http://www.singingquilter.com.
