Considering Quilts 2004 at Atlantic Center at Harris House

Forty-one global fiber artists will be featured at Atlantic Center for the Arts at Harris House, 214 South Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach, in Considering Quilts 2004, Fiber Artists Explore the Quilt, a juried exhibition, held April 3 – May 15, 2004.  Miss Peggy’s Day School of Edgewater is sponsoring the exhibition.

An opening reception with several of the artists in attendance will be held on Saturday, April 3 from 4 to 7 PM.  It is free and open to the public.

On May 8, a second exhibition, Explorations by Innovators, will open at the Hester Merwin Ayers Gallery at Atlantic Center for the Arts, 1414 Art Center Avenue.  This exhibition will feature the works of internationally renowned fiber artists including Pamela Allen, Jette Clover, Maxine Farkas, Rayna Gillman and Vikki Pignatelli.  Works will also be featured by local quilter Amy Koester and polymer artists Karen Woods. The exhibition, which presents works by Considering Quilts instructors, is open from 10 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday. It ends May 15.

Florida quilters are being offered a 30% discount on this and all other quilt-related classes.

In conjunction with the exhibitions, there is the retreat Allen & Farkas on the Far Side at ACA from April 21 to April 26, featuring Pamela Allen of Kingston, Ontario and Maxine Farkas of Lowell, Massachusetts.  Both are featured on www.quiltart.com and in Quilting Arts magazine.         The retreat is $325 for the classes (including lunch) and $325 for room and board at ACA.  The retreat begins with dinner at 5:30 PM and a lecture, The Sewing Machine: My Favorite Power Tool!, by local quilter and WESH TV Channel 2 newscaster Mark Middleton on Wednesday, April 21. The dinner is by reservation only for $15. Interested parties should call 386-423-1753 as soon as possible as there is a limit on space. On Thursday, April 22, Farkas will present Art Quilt History 101 or “Everything I Ever Wanted to Know, I Learned on the Internet,” and Allen speaks on Dumpster Diving for the Sake of Art on April 24.  All lectures are free and open to the public. They take place in the Joan James Harris Theater at Atlantic Center for the Arts, 1414 Art Center Avenue at 7 PM.

The exhibitions end in May with a lecture and several workshops. Local fiber artist Amy Koester, who recently started as fiber arts group which meets in Palm Coast, will teach To Bead or Not to Bead on May 7 and Zen of Free Motion on May 8 (classes are each $65 including lunch).  Rayna Gillman, recently featured on HGTV Simply Quilts, Quilting Arts magazine, and www.quiltart.com, will present an interactive lecture, Creative Courage or “Taking the Leap,”  at 7 PM on May 13 in the Atlantic Center at Harris House Annex. The workshops by Gilman are Surface Design with Found Objects, May 13-14 ($150 including lunches) and Introduction to Image Transfer, May 15 ($100 including lunch).  Vikki Pignatelli, author of Crazy about Curves will feature her Crazy about Curves methods on May 15 ($100 including lunch).   More information about the classes can be obtained at atlanticcenterforthearts.org.

Artists featured in both exhibitions are at the top of their field in fiber arts. They manipulate fabrics with dyes, paints, heat, stitching, stretching, folding, twisting, and adorning to create their visions. The Harris House exhibition features works no wider then 24” including several sculptures.  When asked to explore the quilt form, they pushed outside traditional squares, formal patterns and customary materials.  There are paper embellishments, crotched wire, glass squares, and watch parts along with beads, feathers and safety pins attached to the wall hangings.  Juror Jette Clover, Cocoa, featured in FIBERARTS magazine in the past two issues, said the artists did an excellent job of exploring quilts in new ways.

Most of the quilt artists are award winners from the United States, Japan, Canada and Belgium.

The exhibitions are free and open to the public. Gallery hours for Atlantic Center at Harris House are Tuesday through Friday from 10 to 4 PM, and Saturdays from 10 to 2 PM.
