Quilting Friends,

Happy Cinco de Mayo!

Things are definitely slowing down in QuiltLand, but that’s OK, didn’t we acquire enough projects to last us through the hot, stay-inside months?

If you haven’t heard, there is a brand new quilting concept on the internet: a 24-hour quilting “channel” that you can watch ON THE INTERNET: www.quiltingchannel.com/   If you are having problems running it, it may be worth updating your browser, its free to do that.  Anyway, the people at the Quilting Channel are looking for ideas for content, but take a look at what they have running right now.  You can even have it running in the background as you do other tasks on the computer and click over if you hear something interesting.

I made some low-fat brownies today and thought I’d share the recipe: it’s actually a boxed mix called “No-Pudge” brownies and they are pretty good for almost no fat.  All you add is some non-fat vanilla yogurt, and the boxes come in various flavors: mint (my fave), raspberry and original.  Look for it in the health food or diet section of your grocery store.

If you own an embroidery machine, you might be interested in a website I found that allows you to create text phrases in many different fonts.  The file gets emailed to you to sew out and it’s FREE.  If you don’t own a text creation software program, this is a wonderful service: http://www.daintystitches.com/lettering.html

As always, if your email address changes, please drop me a line: subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY

First of all, thank you for the amazing task you have undertaken of coordinating a clearinghouse for tons of important information for quilters and fiber artists.

As you might recall, Kathy Stachowicz and I ran Warp and Woof Creations for a number of years. Our lives took a twist and turn, I wound up with the business, went back to teaching school and am now moving to NC to take a job as a newspaper journalist, if all goes as planned. Wow, huh?

In the meantime, Warp and Woof is being dismantled and I am selling off several boxes of our books at cost plus shipping. I am thinking they would make marvelous prizes for shows, give-aways for special students, awards for achievements, goodie bags specials, etc. Their sales would make excellent fundraisers for guilds. The "Fine Art of Pin-weaving" has sold more than 10,000 copies and "Warped Women and Material Men"

wasn't far behind. The boxes contain 100 books each and the cost of printing was about $1.70 apiece. They retail for $11.95 and $12.95 respectively. A box that would cost $170.00 + shipping could provide around $1000.00 profit.

KIDS SEWING

For six sequential years, The Kids Quilt Project has taken quilting into schools and organizations.  During school year 2004-05, 606 Brevard County students came face to face with numerous aspects of quilting.  In 12 schools, students produced 351 quilts as well as additional pillows, pincushions, pillowcases and wall hangings.  Approximately 54 quilts were contributed to children's charities.  The effort is a tribute to the coordinated efforts of EduQuilters, Seaside Piecemakers, Cabin Fever Quilters, and the Community Foundation of Brevard.  Photos and information are at the website www.eduquilters.org

MERRITT ISLAND QUILT SHOP – NEW OWNERS

I have sold my shop Thimbles and Thread in Merritt Island, Florida.  The new owners, Sharon Adams and Brenda Thimlar, will be retaining the name and most of the staff.  They are updating the shop and purchasing many bolts of fabric for the store.  My new e-mail address is katquilts2005@aol,com.  The old store e-mail will be deleted by the end of June and I welcome email from any of my customers.  The new e-mail address for the shop will be thimblesandthread@cfl.rr.com.  We invite our mail order customers to e-mail the shop and continue to order the thread which you love so much.  The website www.thimblesandthread.com is under construction and will be available soon.

I will be working with the new owners for several months and also teaching classes when needed.  I would like to receive the Florida Quilt Network Newsletter at my new e-mail address.
