Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #94

February 4, 2006

Quilting Friends,

What a lot to tell you this month!  Hang on to your seats….

I hope you had a chance to see our quilt show: Quilt Magic 2006 in Orlando in January.  They just keep getting better and better, if we DO say so ourselves.  (Take a peek at http://www.cfqg.com/2006winners.htm to see some of the winners).  Check out some of the other many shows happening all over the state, also.  Maybe I’ll see you at the West Pasco show, or if not, maybe the Mount Dora show.  A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to see the show in Fort Myers…Nadine and her gang did a bang up job as well.  I’ve been picking up a few new projects…I’m now into polka-dots and all things round…yum!

For those of you in the Central Florida area, and for those of you who love her special style, this is sad news indeed: Cindy Blackberg is making the move to Maryville, TN.  Maryville is just south of Knoxville.  She and her hubby will be closer to family.  Cindy will still be traveling and teaching quilting, but her base will be Knoxville, instead of Sorrento.  You can contact Cindy during and after the move through her website, www.cindyblackberg.com   Cindy wants to wish the best to all her faithful and wonderful students in the Orlando area.  Her students have generously supported her all these years with their loyal participation in her workshops and they will be missed.

More news for you Central Floridians: The Central Florida Fair is coming up in April (20th-30th) and your creative entries might just win a prize!  It is FREE to enter your creative work: quilts, embroidery, sewing, knitting, painting, woodworking…you name it, we probably have a category.  Take a look at www.CentralFloridaFair.com for more into.  Since I’m the Creative Arts Superintendent, I’d love to have YOUR work in MY building.

If you belong to a quilt guild, or you shop at a quilt shop, please take a look at the pages on my website that list ALL the Florida quilt shops and ALL the Florida quilt guilds.  I’m told that some of the links and email addresses are wrong, and I’d hate for someone to miss out on joining a guild or shopping a shop for this reason.  Please send your changes to  fqn.guild@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

A rudimentary ability in at least one technique will be helpful; however, the basic ability to thread a needle and push it through cloth will be sufficient!

In other words, the techniques used are secondary to the exploration of color.

There will be ample opportunity for sampling a variety of textured yarns, and some basic hands on instruction in dying will be covered.

Supply List:

-Variety of small amounts of yarn and threads (leftovers from any projects).

  These will become community materials

-Tools appropriate to your preferred type of stitching: assorted knitting needles, crochet hooks, tapestry needles, embroidery needles. If you don't have any tools, bring tapestry and large eye sewing needles in 2 or 3 sizes available at most craft stores

-Small pieces of fabric and or canvas (4" x 6" up to 8" x 10") A variety to share would be nice if you have lots - there will be some provided

-Sharp scissors

-Apron or dark work clothes for Saturday dyeing

-Yarn, thread or fabric to be dyed additional materials available for purchase

-Rubber gloves and dust mask

-1-2" stencil brush available at craft stores

LECTURES IN NEW SMYRNA

The Art of Language

Each season, a different aspect of art touching on various artists and their art styles is explored through the lecture series at Atlantic Center for the Art’s Community Art Center. This season’s series departs somewhat from the painter’s studio and ventures into the writer’s lair of typewriters, computers and pencils as well as sewing machines, with a few paint pots tossed in to complete the composition.

The theme was born while listening to a reading of a short story. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then what visions can 10,000 words produce? Taking the idea further, what visions are created by non-fiction versus fiction? Then, the question begs, what is the value of a picture containing words? This series of nine lecture series touches on fiction, non-fiction, poetry, storytelling and picture making.

Lectures are free and open to the public. They are held in the Harris House Annex Gray Room at Arts on Douglas, 123 Douglas Street, New Smyrna Beach, beginning promptly at 7 PM.

February 16

"Nonfiction Lies: Creative Nonfiction and Reality Television"
"Nonfiction Lies: Creative Nonfiction and Reality Television" will explore the "nonfiction" part of creative nonfiction. How true does creative nonfiction have to be? And how do we know, as writers or artists, what is real? Andy Dehnart will read from his own literary journalism about reality television, and discuss how we can learn from reality TV what constitutes truth in writing.

Dehnart's writing on culture and media has appeared in Salon, The Boston Globe, The Advocate, and other publications, and he is a regular contributor to MSNBC. He holds an MFA in nonfiction writing and literature from Bennington College. He currently teaches writing and journalism at Stetson University in Florida, and has also taught writing at Johns Hopkins University's Center for Talented Youth. Additionally, Dehnart publishes and writes Reality Blurred, an acclaimed web site that was the first publication dedicated to reality TV. He comments regularly about popular culture on the radio and in the press.
