Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #99

www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

July 5, 2006

Quilting Friends,

Whew…what a month.  Once I decided to hand over the email management to Yahoo, everything went amazingly smoothly on the Yahoo side.  Still waiting for everyone to switch themselves over, but I do look forward to a painfree e-mailing this month!

I’d like to warmly welcome all the FQN readers who found us on Yahoo and signed up all by themselves.  A bonus I didn’t expect, and I hope that each of you finds something worthwhile in this ad-free, information packed, useful newsletter.  I have a great group of quilters who keep me updated with quilting news, and I get to send it out to you once a month.  Free.

For those of you who haven’t looked at the website, its packed with quilting news, esp. the CALENDAR page:  www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com .

I’ll be teaching an EQ5 class in Orlando/Winter Park on August 10th from 8:30am to 12:30pm.  There are only a few openings left, and the cost is only $35, so let me know if you’re interested.  It will be an introductory class to get you comfortable with the software and excited about exploring its many facets.  Classroom use of computer and software is included in the $35 fee.

Have you noticed the number on this edition?  We’re getting closer to the big 1-0-0!!  Any suggestions on how to celebrate the big event?

As always, if you have a new email address, please let me know at subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com.

OPPORTUNITIES:

O.K., so how did it get to be JULY already? I know, first comes January, then February and so on...but really, doesn't it seem like the calendar police should be giving this year a speeding ticket or something?

Speaking of July, it's that time of year to start revving up your Christmas projects into high gear. So, if you know of any projects that are being coordinated to get care packages and the like to our troops overseas for Christmas, please email them to me at fqn_ops@yahoo.com and I will include them in the upcoming "opportunities" column. That way, we can have more caring hands contributing to this important work.

And if you know of any quilt-related “opportunities” in general, please send them to me at fqn_ops@yahoo.com so they can be shared with everyone next month.

And, without further adieu, here are some fun “Opportunities” to consider:

COMMISSION OPPORTUNITIES FOR QUILTING ARTISTS

The Quilt Finder, a national, custom-quilting business based in Central Florida is seeking the best of the best to complete custom quilt projects ranging from traditional bed quilts to contemporary wall hangings. The Quilt Finder has been in business for over 15 years and has been featured on Simply Quilts and in major magazines and newspapers.

If you already have your own cottage-based business and are looking for a broader market or if you have what it takes to achieve the highest of standards within the specifications of an individual customer’s unique requests, then we want to hear from you.

Our greatest demand right now is for master appliqué quilters who feel comfortable working on, what we have affectionately named, our “Home Quiltrait” commissions -- requests from customers to have their very own home, sweet home intricately replicated in a quilted wall hanging. This work requires the ability to create a fully appliquéd pattern from scratch based upon the customer’s home photos, provide an artist’s sketch to be approved and then create the finished wall hanging.  The work is as fun as it is challenging.

We’d love to talk with you if you are excited about creating the Home Quiltraits, described above, or work on more typical commissions like baby quilts, bed quilts, quilt restoration or quilt finishing by hand or machine. The work is truly rewarding and the financial opportunities can be great -- all with the support of a national company.

We can be reached in the following ways: The Quilt Finder, P.O. Box 182, Mt. Dora, Florida, 32756. Phone: (800) 642-3312 or (352) 735-5118 or Email: thequiltfinder@yahoo.com

QUILT SHOP OWNERS:  DO YOU NEED A LITTLE HELP GROWING YOUR BUSINESS?

Are you a new quilt shop who may be looking for better ways to get your name out there?  Are you an established store that is always looking for unique opportunities to keep the loyal customers you have as well as get new customers to walk in the door every day?

I know firsthand how busy you are and how many things you may be trying to do at any given moment. Sometimes there isn’t the time or the energy to do anything above and beyond the status quo. But what if there was a new way of looking at things or someone to see something that maybe you were just too overworked to see for yourself?

With over 20 years of experience in marketing, sales, advertising and market research, including owning and operating a quilt business and, most recently, four years as the store manager of a successful quilt shop, I can help you grow your business. From advertising copy to press releases and promotional ideas to customer surveys, I can offer you choices to get your business noticed.  And that’s critical in this changing marketplace.

Southwest Florida Quilters Guild

presents

Beginning Quilting & Basic Block Construction

Beginning in July, the Southwest Florida Quilt Guild, Fort Myers, Florida, will be offering a beginning quilting and basic block construction class aimed at helping new quilters get started.  Guild member, Claire Reid, will be teaching this class on the second Saturday of each month at the regular meeting place of the Guild, Gator Room of Terry Park.

Claire is an expert teacher, having many years of producing award-winning quilts.  She will guide newcomers with rotary cutting, piecing, and finishing a full size sampler quilt.  Each session will include construction of one or more blocks and the end result will be a full size quilt.  She makes quilting all the fun it is meant to be.

Each session will be from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and the fee will be $15.00 for each session.  This will be an ongoing class - if you miss one session you can easily pick it up at a later date.

If you have a friend, daughter, niece, cousin, or husband that has indicated an interest in making a quilt, please let her or him know about this class. Look forward to a fun day with this once a month class.  Bring your lunch to avoid uninterrupted class time.
