Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #124 October 9, 2008
Quilting Friends,
If you live in Central Florida, I just have to tell you about a wonderful church Festival happening next weekend (Oct. 17-19). The largest Festival in Seminole County: twenty two amazing food booths, constant entertainment, Kids Rides and Games for all ages, Bingo, Arts & Crafts, Hole-in-One, a Parade, Beer Garden, did I mention Great Food ?? I happen to be in charge of the 22 food booths, and I’m here to tell you everything is cooked to order and I order only the best quality food. Where else will you be able to buy a whole lobster for $12, an Italian sausage and pepper sub for $5, a REAL Philly Cheese Steak for $5….OK, I have to stop, I’m getting hungry again. Come on down to St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Altamonte Springs,. For more info, go to: Community Fest
From the State of Florida: As you probably know, it has been two years since the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) implemented a new emergency contact information system (ECI) that allows Florida motorists to voluntarily register emergency contact information online using their Florida driver licenses or Florida identification cards. The information can then be accessed by law enforcement officers to notify designated contacts if a person is seriously injured or killed in a traffic crash or for non-traffic related incidents as well. To date, 1.3 million people have entered their information into the system but with over 15 million drivers in the state of Florida, we have a long way to go to reach our participation goals. If you have not already provided this voluntary information, and are interested in doing so, click on the link below.

I don’t know if any of your new year’s resolutions are green, as in saving the environment, but just in case they are, one of my resolutions is to share with you some of my favorite green living tips. Feel free to share yours too for future newsletters! If we don’t start changing the way we simply live, there won’t be much left of this earth for our grandchildren. That is a given.
Tip #10 Sure, recycling is a wonderful thing, but re-USE-ing is even better. Think about the overhead and resources needed to collect, process and close the loop on a single plastic bottle, for instance. So before you toss that item in the trash or the recycling bin, take a minute and get creative. Can you use that plastic clamshell in the garden? To take a salad to a sick friend? Can you shred that junk mail and put it in the compost bin? Can you use that shoe box to take cookies to a bake sale or the local fire station? Consider this a challenge to reUSE more “trash” this month.
As always, if you have email changes, let me know: subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

Design Your Own Nature Collage: Glued or Stitched October 18th, Mt. Dora Center for the Arts
This class will help take the fear out of design. Using your own nature photo, you’ll learn how to interpret it in fabric, (and possibly paper, for you gluers.) Multiple group and solo exercises will give you the skills and confidence you need to start your own design. A raw edge collage technique will ensure maximum flexibility and speedy results. You will learn: Identifying and placing a focal point, how cropping can help a composition, getting your fabric to do the work and how to work with raw edge collage. Stitchers, you’ll start pinning your composition and go home with it well underway. Gluers, you’ll glue your composition during class. No artistic skills are needed for this class, but artistic courage is required.
9:30am to 4:30pm (with an hour break for lunch), $85 members, $110 nonmembers, *Note: This class requires an additional $6.00 for supplies, payable during class.

------------------------------------------------------------------- AMI SIMMS IS COMING TO GAINESVILLE
Get your tickets now!
Alzheimer’s activist, internationally known quilt instructor and author Ami Simms is coming to Gainesville, Florida, December 13, 2008 for a very special double-lecture and trunk show. Tickets – priced at a mere $10! – are now available. (If you don’t know Ami and her work, just go to www.amisimms.com and get acquainted.)
Quilters of Alachua County Day Guild will host Ami, who will present two program lectures with trunk shows, including “Living With Quilts: A Survival Guide,” and a second on her Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative. Even Madison, Ami’s Mom’s service dog, will be getting in on this act.
Ami will appear in the Oak Room in Oak Hammock at the University of Florida. Oak Hammock is located west of U.S. 441, and 1.1 miles east of I-75, off Williston Road (southernmost of the four Gainesville exits). Turn south at the Oak Hammock sign onto S. W. 25th Terrace. (Directions and map are on the www.QACDG.org website.)
This exceptional event is open to everyone. Area guilds, seize this opportunity! Doors open at 6:45 p.m., Ami will begin speaking at 7:30 p.m. QACDG worked hard to keep tickets at just $10 per person – our guild’s gift to the central Florida quilting and sewing community. Refreshments will be served.
To purchase tickets, see Laura Sills at your next QACDG meeting (or a QACDG representative at your guild’s next meeting), or send a self-addressed stamped envelope, and $10 per ticket, to:
Laura Sills, Treasurer QACDG 1521 S. W. 96th Street Gainesville, FL 32607
For information, contact Beverley Hilton at Bevhilton1 @ aol.com.
And . . . Wouldn’t it be great to present Ami with Journal Quilts to take back for her Alzheimer’s Initiative fund-raising auction? Go to Ami’s website, www.amisimms.com for information on the Alzheimer’s Initiative, and to print off the information list that must accompany all submissions. (Or go to the QACDG website – www.qacdg.org – for a print-out of the info form.) And to see more of Ami’s inspiring and uplifting quilts.
