Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #128 February 1, 2009
Quilting Friends,
A few Sundays ago I was really late for Mass, and really grumbling about it. Then I figured out why. I was supposed to hear a particular bit on the radio. It really moved me; so much so that I want to share it with you. You may be familiar with NPR’s “This I Believe”, where ordinary Americans take a few minutes to tell the rest of us their beliefs. (My daughter found the recently published book by the same name and gave it to me for Christmas. I read a few sections each day…wonderful.) Anyway, this morning, a SIX YEAR OLD child gave us 30 of his beliefs. I was blown away by his wisdom. Words we can all live with. Words we should type up and post on the bathroom mirror or the refrigerator. They were that powerful. Take a look and tell me if you don’t agree: http://tinyurl.com/777lbj And this from a 6-year-old. Amazing.
You may remember that I’ve listed a couple of longarm machines for sale in the past. Well, they were sold so quickly from those listings, that I’ve decided to include a Classified Section in this newsletter. If you have something sewing or quilt related to sell, consider an advertisement in this newsletter. There are over 1600 interested readers in Florida and beyond. The charge is $50 for your ad, which will include two listings (two consecutive newsletters) for a single ad. Please send your ad to ad@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com, and look for a reply from me with instructions for sending the payment.
Nolting Pro 24 with stitch regulator with regular bobbin. Includes patterns, stand alone bobbin winder, bobbins, pantographs, books, extra parts and Ruler Mate. This machine is 1 1/2 years old with low “mileage". Approximate value $16,500. Will sell for $9500. Pickup in Sanford, FL. Call Carol at 407-529-6634.
Are you reading my green tips? I didn’t hear a peep last month…do you want to see more? Show me the love! Well, here’s one more anyway:
Green Tip #14
Most quilters can’t bear to throw away even the smallest scraps of anything, so here we are…Ziploc bags full of batting scraps. I bet you have an idea or two up your sleeve, I know I do mine: if the batting scraps are big enough, decide on a block size and cut the batting into squares. I did 6” squares because that was the size of my ruler. A perfect size for those raggedy quilts you see with the seams on the front. And for the pieces that aren’t big enough for that? They are great for dusting or attaching to your Swiffer dry mop (thanks Teddy Pruitt for that idea!). Then, if you have a compost bin, you can toss them into that. How’s that for green? Send me your ideas for batting scraps and we’ll do this again next month.
As always, if you have email changes, let me know:subscribe@FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

I’ve been working with Ruby Seto, who was a participant on last May’s tour to France. Together we’ve planned a textile tour to Japan, November 4-17, 2009. Ruby has traveled in Japan several times; I’ve led a tour there once. Between us, various contacts and lots of research, we have put together a tour for quilters and those interested in textiles.
We will fly from San Francisco, or your closest airport, on November 4, arriving at the airport in Osaka to start the tour on November 5. We’ll spend days in Kyoto, Takayama and Tokyo. The focus is on traditional Japanese fabrics: shibori, indigo and yuzen dyeing, sashiko stitching, kimonos, and museums which showcase these. We’ll meet with Japanese quilters and attend the Yokohama Quilt Show.
Take a look at all the information on the web site. If you have questions, call or email me. Your family members and friends are welcome. And thank you for passing the word to others who might be interested.
Please note that we still have space in the May 8-21 2009 tour to the French Riviera and Provence. Check out the French itinerary when you are on the web site.
