Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #155 August 8, 2011
Quilting Friends,
Since we have so many new readers to this newsletter lately, I thought I’d give you a little back story on the FQN newsletter and website. I’ve been publishing this newsletter since January of 1999. At the time, I was program chair for my guild, and wanted to create a way for guilds and teachers to network. My guild was looking for ways to share the cost of national teachers and a state-wide newsletter seemed like a workable idea. Back then, I was scouring the web every month for Florida shows, exhibits, etc. Nowadays, most everyone knows to send the information to me, which makes my job so much easier. (If you are interested in getting a reminder each month to send me new news, send me an email).
I don’t remember exactly when, but maybe 6 or 7 years ago my very talented husband created the FQN website as a Christmas gift to me. He taught me how to keep it updated, and its been such a great way to keep quilters updated with quilting events in Florida. A few years later ‘Another Pat’ decided she was ready to give up her wonderful webpages of Florida quilt shops and guilds, so she gave them to me and I’ve been keeping those lists updated ever since. I also have a favorite recipe page, a personal quilt gallery page, and the latest addition: a list of LongArm Quilters in Florida. It is not a complete list of course, but we’re getting there. Oh yes, I added a Classes/Lecture page as I am a teacher and lecturer as well.
Recently, I was surprised to see my web statistics. I haven’t really paid any attention before, but apparently the website gets 48,000 hits a month. There are 2200 readers of this newsletter each month, and although most live in Florida, I have readers in many other states AND countries who visit Florida. FQN is a force to be reckoned with!
Well, there you are. Maybe you’re wondering what’s in it for me. I have to say I enjoy the ‘job’, and even though I don’t get paid in dollars, your kind notes and comments when we meet at shows and other events are what keep me going. It is a unique service; I don’t know of any other state that has this type of newsletter, although there are many state guilds, of course. We are lucky to live in such a busy quilting state; there is much to do most every month of the year.
Enjoy the newsletter!
I almost forgot: If you live in the Central Florida area, and have always wanted to take a Stack-n-Whack class, I’ll be teaching it in my home on August 24 & 25th. I have two more openings. There will only be five students total, so you’ll get lots of attention. Email me if you’d like more info.
Also, I’ll be presenting my ever-popular StashBuster Lecture at the annual SSQA meeting on October 15. I’d love to see you there, and I know our State Guild would love to see a few new faces. See their announcement below….

------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUILTS AT THE CORNELL MUSEUM
Color is everything this summer at the Cornell Museum of Art and Culture at Old School Square in Delray Beach. The museum’s current show, Color Outside the Lines, focuses on Crayon Art and the many uses of color. This is coloring as you never imagined it! To complement their theme, the Museum is now showing the twenty-five year collection of quilts from the South Florida Fair contests which make up the Palm Beach County Quilters’ Guild collection. Because of their size and limited space in other venues, this is the first time that the entire collection has ever been shown at one time. The museum is a wonderful venue with large galleries that allow us to show all of the quilts and it is spectacular to see them all hanging. In addition, two groups of small art quilts from the Quilters’ Innovative Design group are included with the display. “Colorganics” is a set of 13 quilts which show the range of the color spectrum. “Zipt” presents 10 small quilts, each of which contains one or more zippers as part of its design. The show opened July 12 and continues through October 23, 2011. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 AM to 4:30 PM and on Sunday from 1:00PM until 4:30 PM. Please check the Old School Square website: www.oldschool.org for specific information on hours, admission, and directions to Old School Square. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ConKerr Cancer, Miles of Pillowcase Smiles
September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. To raise awareness Florida ConKerr Cancer chapters will join together with chapters nationwide to produce more pillowcases than ever before! During the entire month of September, we will participate in the Second Annual Miles of Pillowcase Smiles. ConKerr Cancer volunteers around the country and internationally as well, will share their time, talent and material to make cheerful handmade pillowcases for their local children’s hospitals and create “miles of pillowcase smiles.” Our goal is to create 44,000 pillowcases (over 20 miles), 1 for every child currently in treatment. The mission of ConKerr Cancer - A Case For Smiles is to provide children with cancer or other life-changing illnesses with a feeling of warmth, love and a smile. ConKerr Cancer does this through the simple gift of cheerful, colorful pillowcases, in a myriad of designs, sewn by volunteers and delivered to children undergoing treatment. Not only to these pillowcases brighten the sterile hospital atmospher, they bring heart-warming cheer to the children, their parents and caregivers during these extremely difficult times. The positive impact of ConKerr’s pillowcases is inspiring. A personalized pillowcase makes a hospital room feel more like home. For those fortunate enough to participate in “sewing days,” the feelings of companionship and accomplishment at a new skill come as a welcome diversion from the seemingly never-ending regiment of chemotherapy and other treatments. Family members experience the direct feelings of kindness from strangers as they see their children’s faces light up. For the nurses, participating in the child’s act of picking his or her favorite pattern, color or design can be the first step in a personal bond, far removed from the usual routine of poking and prodding. ConKerr Cancer began when founder Cindy Kerr’s son Ryan was diagnosed with cancer in 2002 and she started making pillowcases to brighten his room. Sadly, Ryan passed away in 2008 but his spirit lives on in the smiles that each pillowcase brings to sick kids across North America, England, Puerto Rico, Israel and South Africa.
Please participate with us in Miles of Pillowcase Smiles. We will be holding sewing events at numerous locations in Florida. Check our website www.conkerrcancer.org for event locations and times.
Please partner with us in this extraordinary effort. You will be forever changed.

NATIONAL TEACHER IN FLORIDA
I am a quilt teacher from NJ (author of New York Beauty Simplified AQS 2011) and will be visiting the Seaside Piecemakers and the Florida Cabin Fever Quilters the last week of September 2012. I would be willing to visit another guild or two while I am in Florida (for expense sharing).
If anyone is interested, they can contact me and I will put them in touch with the program chairs of the two guilds.
My websites are www.twocountryquilters.com and www.froghollowdesigns.com
I'm also attaching a flyer for our Patchwork Pirate quilting cruise.
Thank you so very much.
