Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #200

Quilting Friends,
Um, hello, did you happen to notice the number up there? Yep, this is the 200th missive from yours truly. Hard to believe, I know, that we’ve been going at this for 16 years. One of these days I should write the history of FQN, but that’s not today. Suffice it to say that I’m still enjoying this venture…getting the word out to quilters far and wide about all the wonderful quilting events happening in this sunny state of ours. Thanks for tagging along. (Birthday gifts always welcome, lol.)
I guess its time to slow down, stay indoors and get some quilting done, eh? At least if you’re still in Florida. The quilt shows are winding down, although we have some good looking Florida Shop Hops cranking up soon. More below.
I got a chance to see the quilt show in Gainesville last weekend, produced by the Tree City Quilter’s Guild. Not only were the quilts beautiful and of great variety, but the thoughtful touches like decorative vignettes in every corner and a traveling barber-shop quartet put the show over the top! My parents have recently moved to a senior living apartment in Gainesville so they were able to enjoy the show with me. Win win!
If you or someone you know owns an online quilt shop based in Florida, I’m now posting that information on my Shops page. See the online shops here.
To get a complete, organized, hotlinked listing of all the Florida upcoming shows, retreats, workshops, shop hops, exhibits, etc, please visit the Calendar.
Happy Quilting, Mary-Jeanine
PS: I love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime!

CHARITY SEWING IN SATELLITE BEACH
QAKH (Quilters Against Kids Homeless/Hunger) will rev up for the summer beginning with the June 20 quilt-in at Scotty Culp Auditorium, Cassia Blvd., in Satellite Beach. QAKH meets 9:00 – 4:00 on the third Saturdays of June, July, and August. Two hundred plus quilts are sewn at these events and are given to homeless children in the fall. Since 2011, over 1,000 quilts have covered the toes of homeless elementary kids. QAKH personnel work with the school guidance counselors to identify the children. This is a community event – people are invited to bring their machines, come when they can and stay as long as they wish. Most bring their lunches and work all day. Non-sewing jobs such as ironing need volunteers since a great deal of pressing is done throughout the day. Check www.eduquilters.org for info or email margie@cfl.rr.com.
Many inquiries have been made about the newer quilt guild in Satellite Beach… Coastal Quilters meets on the third Saturdays of January – May and September – November, reserving summertime for QAKH. Generally, the members sew all day. We bring our lunch and hold Show & Tell as we munch! See details at www.eduquilters.org.

A NEW QUILTING-THEMED BOOK
After a longer delay than planned, Charlie Hudson’s latest quilting- themed novel, Small Town Quilting Blues, is available on-line or through special order. In fact with this being the third book in the series, Charlie has included a section in the back of the book with the major recurring characters and some of the new ones that she introduces. The story opens as Helen Crowder and three of the circle members head out for a quilting cruise in the Caribbean and when they return home, there is a controversy brewing in town about an organization that wants to open a group home for special needs adults. Several members of the circle are convinced that there is a deeper motivation than is in the publically stated objections. On the personal side, Helen is trying to work through her conflicting emotions of what type of relationship she wants to have with Max. As always, the entire first chapter is posted on her website of http://charliehudson.net. If you haven’t been introduced to Small Town Lies and Small Town Haven, you’ll probably want to take a look at them first.
