Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #236

Quilting Friends,
My name for my latest creation: ‘Hoopla La!’ I used this pattern. You may remember the ‘A-Maze-Zing’ quilt…from the same pattern designer..so much fun!!
Goodness it got hot quick! I’m already missing the non-stop rain of just weeks ago. Well, it DOES mean more time indoors to get some of these UFOs off the list. Why is it…when I take one off the list, two more jump on?
If you’re a fairly new reader of this newsletter, you may not know that the Calendar page on the website is a quick way to view upcoming events all over the state. Give it a look-see.
Happy Quilting,
Mary-Jeanine
PS: I’d love to hear from you, so drop me a line sometime.

MODERN QUILT CLASS IN LAKE MARY
Save the Date for the Strips as Sourdough Quilt Starter Class with Elaine Popham aka @messygoat June 30th at Bernina Sewing Center in Lake Mary. Checkout her blog and find her on Instagram to see her amazing work.
Elaine's description of her class:
"If there’s a design concept or exploration that they’ve been wanting to try but didn’t want to risk wasting fabric, this is a great time for that. If they want to explore improvisational piecing, this is a great time for that. Basically, it’s string piecing on hyperdrive, with no foundations to constrain what they can do with it. I can manage there are 20 very different projects happening simultaneously.
First thing we will do is make a small string strata out of 10 2.5” strips, and then we will chop them up according to how the spirit moves them as individuals. Sometimes people are very organized and systematic about how they create their strings – all parallel cuts, alternating colors, gradations of colors, high/low contrast, fabrics made to go together or not.
It honestly doesn’t matter. I will bring samples of straight cut strings, parallel cut strings, curved strings, color gradations, high contrast, low contrast, attempting to clash (I tried to make one ugly- I can’t do it).
Then people can slab them, create blocks (traditional or not), use template rulers, whatever. I have cool tricks for curved piecing that takes the angst out of that, etc. I LOVE doing Drunkards Path blocks with this technique.
My favorite thing about this approach is that I never seem to run out of ideas- there’s always something else I can try. And if I decide that an idea isn’t worth developing, I haven’t used a lot of fabric to discover that – it can be made into a zip pouch, a mini, or whatever and I don’t feel like I’ve wasted my time or money."

QUILT EXHIBIT IN TRENTON
The Florida Quilt Museum Patriotic Quilt Exhibit Honors Those Who Serve
June 1, 2018: Trenton, Florida – The Florida Quilt Museum announces In Honor of Those Who Serve: A Patriotic Quilt Exhibit, that will hang in the History Room of the Florida Quilt Museum through the end of August 2018. The Florida Quilt Museum, located in downtown, historic Trenton, Florida at 409 North Main Street is open Monday through Saturday, 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Admission is free, with donations accepted and parking is plentiful.
“Since the dawn of our great County, our pride and patriotism has been expressed in fabric,” remarked Stephanie Metts, curator of the Patriotic Quilt exhibit and founder of the Florida Quilt Museum, “Our patriotic exhibit of quilts features over 40 examples of how we honor our Country and remember our fallen heroes with fabric and needle art.”
Florida quilt guilds, such as The Springhouse Quilters Guild, Leesburg Quilting Sisters, Country Roads Quilters, Tree City Quilt Guild and the Pensacola Quilt Guild join individual artists Pam McIntrye, Lyn White, Mary Ann Acker, Teddy Pruitt, Marcella Banford, Elaine Neimeth, Elaie Dunn, Donna Rissman, and Norma Birman, among others, who loaned their works to this show.
Highlights of the exhibit include Shirley Kerstetter’s Presidential Quilt which features 44 presidential portraits in petit point, Hail to the USA: The Governors Quilt by Sally Glaze, showcasing 50 state blocks signed by the governors of the state, circa 1980, both on loan from the artists. Olustee Gentlemen by Ann Opgenorth, part of the permanent collection of the Florida Quilt Museum, and a perennial favorite of museum visitors, also hangs among the many Stars and Stripes.
Several of the quilts on display are Quilts of Valor, “made to cover all those service members and veterans wounded physically or psychologically with comforting and healing,” according to their website, QOVF.ORG. Over 187,000 quilts have been stitched and presented to service members or their families since 2003 through the Quilt of Valor Foundation.
The exhibit also features a “Service Members Corner” showcasing uniforms and gear from the Revolutionary War thru Desert Storm, including an authentic World War I Army jacket and battlefield helmet. First Sergeant Jon Meinholz, USA, retired, who serves as the JROTC Instructor at Bell High School coordinated the corner.
“The uniforms represent our desire to band together to protect and defend our Country and preserve the American way of life,” commented First Sergeant Meinholz, “No one wants to have to put on the uniform, but we do, and those that do are willing to forfeit all they have for democracy and freedom.”
Mrs. Metts was inspired to organize this show after the tragic murder of two Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Deputies in April of 2018. “Our entire community felt this great loss and we wanted to acknowledge Sgt. Noel Ramirez and Deputy Taylor Lindsey’s as the hero’s they are and the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom they made. Two Gilchrist County Sherriff’s Deputy uniforms stand empty, flanked by photographs of Sgt. Noel Ramirez and Deputy Taylor Lindsey and surrounded by Patriotic Quilts.”
The Florida Quilt Museum is home to The Florida Quilt Trail and Trenton’s Suwannee Valley Quilt Festival. The Florida Quilt Museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying Florida’s quilting heritage.

QUILT EXHIBIT IN WHITE SPRINGS
WHITE SPRINGS QUILT TRAIL
THE EXHIBIT
May 1, 2018: Trenton, Florida – The Florida Quilt Museum announces the arrival of The White Springs Branch of the Florida Quilt Trail. “There are many fifth and sixth generation families living in the area, but the community also welcomes newcomers, and enjoys the distinct traditions that pass from one generation to the next”, remarked the White Springs Quilt Trail Community Coordinator Merri McKenzie, “The styles of the muse quilts show various approaches toward the practice of quilt making along cultural lines and preferences, and range from the practical and utilitarian to show quilts.”
The Quilt Trail Blocks are featured on businesses, private homes and parks. Maps are available through the Adams Country Store, White Springs City Hall and on the Florida Quilt Trail website: https://floridaquilttrail.com/.
