- Newsletter #39

Quilting Friends,
- If you have been
on any of the sewing or quilting lists on the internet, you are probably
familiar with Popser and his whimsical essays about his wife’s
“addictions”. He has finally gathered
the stories into book form: A Year
in the Life—12 Months of Sewing and 52 Weeks of Quilting.
I have both books and am enjoying them, a little bit at a
time as I wind down each night. Each
story is so sweet, it makes me smile inside.
If you aren’t familiar with Popser, or just want to get a fix, check out
www.popser.com. However, the books are so nice as gifts for
you or for someone who can understand the humor in our quilting life. The books are illustrated by Chris Hansen,
and are available from Open Chain Publishing
800-906-6788 or www.thecreativemachine.com
- Here’s some
exciting news: Dover Publications has
finally come online at www.doverpublications.com. Now you can look at all the book covers in
color without having to search for your latest catalog. Great local search engine on the site, too.
- I had a great time last weekend at the SSQA Symposium in
Altamonte Springs. We quilted, we
laughed, we ate, we listened and we learned.
Oh yes, and we came home with great door prizes and auction items. Thanks to Art Callinan and her great crew, a
wonderful time was had by all. If you
still don’t know about SSQA and all the wonderful things that come from this
Florida State Guild, check out www.ssqa.org
Please be sure that your guild is a member. How else will you find out about things like: a Manual on legal
issues pertaining to quilt guilds; an extensive list of Florida Teachers,
Judges, Quilt Shops, Guilds, and Appraisers; Quilt Documentation efforts; Plans
for a Florida Quilt Museum and so on ?
- One of the things we talked about in class (very Off
Topic, LOL) was how to keep the junk
snail mail and junk phone calls at bay.
My classmates suggested that I post this information in the newsletter,
as I have successfully reduced my incoming junk mail of all types to
practically zero:
Junk Snail Mail: Send a request to Direct Marketing
Association 11 W. 42nd St. PO Box 3861
New York, NY 10163. Just tell them to put you on the NO JUNK
MAIL list. It’s FREE!
Junk Phone Calls: download a form from the Florida
Division of Consumer Affairs at http://www.800helpfla.com/~cs/tmkinstruct.html You pay $10 the first year and $5 a year
after that. They put you on the “no
solicitation calls” list and if someone DOES call you, you can take legal
action. I am on the list and get NO
solicitation calls whatsoever.
Junk Email: set up a separate email account with a
free service (hotmail.com, yahoo.com, etc) and use that email address anytime
you need to give out your email address to commercial websites. It’s FREE!!
- And finally, here is a new touch to the newsletter, I hope
you find it useful: In the Calendar
section I will list the Newsletter Number that each item can be found. If you save these newsletters (and you
should!), you can refer back to get more info.

ABC QUILT REQUEST
Would you please share this with your guild membership? Thank you!
I am a volunteer with ABC Quilts, a non-profit charity
supplying baby quilts to at-risk newborns.
Learn more about us at www.abcquilts.com. Last year we tried a new venture. We pitched a tent at two major New Hampshire craft fairs. Quilters from all over New England joined us
to sew over 800 baby quilts in under 12 days.
We had fun and will do it again this year in June and August. However we want quilters from all over the
world to join with us in this effort.
Would you please send an 8 1/2 " square of children's fabric to our
office at:
ABC Quilts
596 First NHTurnpike
Suite 3
Northwood, NewHampshire 03261
Your simple act of kindness will be translated into a
gesture of love and comfort for a challenged infant. We would like to recieve the squares on or before 7/1/01. More information on this request may be
obtained from the event coordinator, John Linville, at
bellytk@nh.ultranet.com. Thank you and
God Bless.

create and pass on to their children.
