Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #49

January 3, 2002

Quilting Friends,

What a great husband I have, he gave me a FQN website for Christmas!  Check it out at www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com.  Note that I have a Calendar Page, and if you click on the newsletter number on the right side of the list, it will take you to the full description in whatever newsletter is listed (He did good, huh?)

If anyone is planning a bus trip to Paducah in 2002, could you please send me the info?  I’ve had several request for this.

REQUEST FOR 9-11 QUILTS

United We Quilt is a group of quilters based in Vermont who are serving as a clearinghouse, matching families who lost loved ones on 9/11/01 with volunteer quilters who will make a memory quilt in celebration of the loved one's life.  As of 12/01/01 we have had over 100 family requests and we have matched 70 with quilters. We need many more emotionally resilient quilters as we are committed to matching every family requesting this with a quilter and we receive more requests daily. This is a long term commitment requiring patience and the ability to listen and be there for a grieving family member (even from a distance via e-mail or phone) and to plan with them what should be on their special quilt. It is also among the most satisfying quilting you will ever do as the families are extremely appreciative. A NEW QUILT SHOP IN CENTRAL FLORIDA

Dear Quilting Friends,

I have exciting news to start off 2002.  Quilts & Other Comforts will be opening a retail store in Mt. Dora, Florida in February.  Many of you have fond memories of the store that we used to have in Wheat Ridge, Colorado back in the early 1970's.  It was one of the first full-service quilt stores in the country and was run by Bonnie Leman and her family.

We are in the process of remodeling an old 1920's house that will be the site of the new store.  We are painting, papering, sanding, landscaping, and decorating.  I have had a ball picking out products that I think quilters will want and like.  When we open the doors we expect to have over 2,000 bolts of fabrics, and hundreds of books, patterns and supplies -- and that's just to start!

Mt. Dora, Florida is located about 27 miles north of Orlando and is just about one of the most charming little towns you will find anywhere.  It is full of antique stores, art galleries, restaurants, and inns.  It is surrounded by lakes and parks and even has its own lighthouse.  Mt. Dora hosts numerous events throughout the year including craft, antique, art, and bicycle festivals.  What I find most appealing about Mt. Dora is what it doesn't have in its old town:  not one fast food restaurant and not one chain store.  You can read more about Mt. Dora by visiting this site: http://www.mt-dora.com/

I will be moving to Mt. Dora this month to finish setting up the store, so I'm obviously a little panicked right now.  It's a challenging time--but this has been a real labor of love.  It will be so nice to meet customers face-to-face and to hear exactly what you are looking for.  I hope that the store will help to make our catalog even better.

I will let you know how things are progressing and will try to get some photos on the site for you to view soon.  I hope that you will all have a chance to visit in person, but if not, you can always visit our quilt store on-line or we will deliver it right to your mailbox.
