Quilting
Friends,
----
My guild, Central Florida Quilters Guild in Sanford, Florida, would like to
invite your guild to share national teacher, Sharyn Craig in March of
2004. For more details, contact Sharyn
at her website www.sharyncraig.com or
Cindy Smith, Program VP for CFQG at MoonMaidenC1@aol.com.
I’ve taken several classes from Sharyn over the years, and she has always been one of my favorite teachers. The purple quilt on my bed (see my homepage) is from one of her classes, so you know I like her style!
---- Also, for those of you in the Central
Florida area, I’ve happened upon two very worthwhile programs that are in need
of our “excess stashes”. If you have
fabric, trims or thread that you can part with, listen up: Chris Thompson at 407-656-4751 has organized
seamstresses who make items for local missions. Sue Cepull (sue@cepull.org)
works with a church group to make clothes for homeless kids, totebags and
backpacks for same, and with the leftover scraps, they make lap robes for
nursing homes. How’s that for thrifty? And thoughtful.
I
would be glad to post information like this for other areas of Florida. Let me know!

QUILT EXHIBITS IN PENSACOLA AND MOBILE
Quilt National 25th Anniversary -- Pensacola Museum Of Art
Do you want to find a
reason to come to Pensacola and the Florida Panhandle? From May 30 through July 12 you can see the
best of the best in Art Quilts today at the Pensacola Museum of Art. Quilts are from the 2001 25th
anniversary show held at the Dairy Barn in Ohio.
Quilts
by artists Carol Bryer Fallert, Sue Benner, Linda Levin, Libby Lehman, Susan
Shie and many others will be in the show. The Pensacola Museum of Art, with
some help provided by the Pensacola Quilters’ Guild, will provide the community
with an exceptional opportunity for you to see these works up close. Eleanor McCain, one of the artists included,
will be giving a talk on How to Handle Rejection on June 8, at the Museum at
2:00pm. Free and open to the public. Opening reception for the show will be
Friday May 30. Call ahead at 850-432- 6247 to schedule docent led tours. Museum
is open Tues through Friday 10 to 5pm.
Saturdays and Sundays FROM noon to 5pm.
Tuesdays are free. Other times
admission fee is $2 for adults.
On
your way to Pensacola, stop by the Mobile Art Museum to see the show QUILTS
OF GEE’S BEND which has been getting rave reviews in USA TODAY as it
exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Over 70 quilts, which the NEW YORK TIMES critic called “some of
the most miraculous works of modern art America has produced”, will be
displayed. The quilts were made by a
group of about 40 women in Gee’s Bend, an isolated hamlet south of Selma
surrounded by the Alabama River where the descendants of slaves have passed
down their quilting art over six generations. The show runs Saturday June 14
through Sunday August 31 2003. This exhibition was organized by the Museum of
Fine Arts in Huston and the Tinwood Alliance of Atlanta. Over $1 million has
been donated to Tinwood to help preserve the quilts.
