Florida
Quilt Network
- Newsletter #64
June 7, 2003
Quilting Friends,
I let a month go by without a newsletter, partly because
there were no new submissions, but mostly because, well, if you’re a mom of
school-aged children, then you know how crazy May is!
I’ll be letting the month of July go, as well, as my family
and I are set to take off on “Odyssey 2003”, a 6 week camping trip to points
west (Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce, SLC, Redwoods, Corvallis (Oregon), Yellowstone,
Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Branson, and a few more stops we haven’t even
planned yet). Since the family reunion
in Corvallis is 3 hours from the Sisters Quilt Show, you know where I’ll be
that day! My husband and I are looking
forward to returning to all these spectacular sites after 13 years away.

QUILT EXHIBIT IN ST. PETE
Famous Women Through Quilts: Patterns of Power
Opens at Florida International Museum
Remarkable Work by Artist Rebekka Seigel on Display May 7-
August 31, 2003
St. Petersburg, FL (April 24, 2003) Florida International
Museum (FIM) presents Famous Women Through Quilts: Patterns of Power, on
display May 7 through August 31, 2003. This series of quilts designed by artist
Rebekka Seigel honors twelve inspiring women of the 20th century. Famous Women
Through Quilts features such women as Ella Fitzgerald, Babe Didrikson, Martha
Graham, Louise Nevelson, Lucille Ball, and Barbara Jordan. It tells their
stories in a unique manner, through the garments they wore for defining moments
in their lives or as a means of expressing who they are. The quilts are
interactive because they can be manipulated just like paper dolls.
"Rebekka is known for her excellent technique and
original designs," says Mary Anna Murphy, Exhibitions Director of Florida
International Museum. "These quilts are really works of art. Rebekka has
been featured in gallery and museum exhibits across the country."
Florida International Museum is the permanent home of The
John F. Kennedy
Collection and through Fall 2003, The Cuban Missile Crisis: When
The Cold War Got Hot. Through April 30th, FIM is hosting Art for the People:
Soviet Realism, portraits and genre paintings from the former USSR republics.
Through May 4th, FIM is hosting the North American debut of Mystique of the
Motorcycle, a display of 83 rare and classic motorcycles from the world-class
Trev Deeley Motorcycle Collection, and Women of Our Time, a collection of
photographs from the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery depicting 75 of
the most notable American women of the 20th century.
Admission for all exhibits is $12 for adults, $11 for
college students and seniors 65+, $6 for students. Children under 6 are free.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday noon
to 5 p.m. Last entry to the museum is at 4 p.m. daily.

QUILT SHOW IN JACKSONVILLE
QuiltFest, Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida presents "New
Traditions from Old Favorites" Sept 26, 27 & 28, 2003. Deadline to
register a quilt: August 8, 2003
Mail in for quilts accepted: Sept. 1 - 12, 2003. Hours of
operation of the show: Friday & Saturday 9 am to 6 pm and Sunday Noon to 5
pm.
Each month, representatives from seven local guilds in
Jacksonville meet to plan and organize our annual quilt show. "New
traditions from old favorites" is our 17th quilt show! In 2002, we had
over 5,000 visitors. Our vendors are well cared for; there is a waiting list
for a place in the vendors mall and we are told they look forward to
Jacksonville's show every year. The 2003 show will be September 26, 27, &
28 at the Morocco Shrine Auditorium located at 3800 St. John's Bluff Rd. We have managed to keep our entry free at
$5.00 with a weekend pass costing only $7.00 and our parking is free. Children
under 10 are admitted free with a paying adult. We also offer discount rates at
a local hotel with breakfast offerings that get everyone off to a great start.
New to our show is the "Quilt Sale Room" offering finished large quilts, baby quilts, wall
hangings, blocks, UFO's - whatever our
members from the seven sister guilds are willing to put in the sale left from
their own endeavors in the quilting world. This is one way we say
"thanks" to our hard working guild members who help put our show on
every year.
Every year we have a silent auction of miniature quilts that
benefit the Shriners Transportation Fund - and every year we give more as
visitors to the show become more generous! This Fund pays for transporting of
children to hospitals that can tend to their (sometimes life threatening)
injuries. In addition, our seven sister guilds offer hand made quilts for
various fund raisers - from their favorite charity to education funds in their
own guilds to keep the quilting tradition alive.
Hard work & enthusiasm of our members and exquisite
quilts from all over the nation make the Jacksonville, Florida quilt show one
you will not want to miss. Visit our web site to learn more!
