Quilting
Friends,
A
quick note from me today as I’m walking out the door to vacation in North
Carolina this week:
It’s
not too early to start putting some of these 2005 quilt shows on your
calendar! Especially if you’d like to
plan some bus trips.
I’m
sad to report that a great quilting shop has closed: Michelle Ross of Pelican
Quiltworks in South Daytona Beach has closed her shop. She will continue the BOMs and have an
online shop, as well as vend at the Jacksonville show. Michelle, we’ll miss your smiling face and
beautiful fabrics!
As
always, if you are having problems getting my newsletter, you can take a look
at it on my website at http://www.floridaquiltnetwork.com/ I also have a very handy Calendar page where
all the events are cross linked and hot linked to more info elsewhere.

DOUBLE
VISION EXHIBIT
Seventeen
watercolor paintings by Rod Buffington of Springfield, IL are paired with 17
quilts created by acclaimed American quilters.
Together, they reveal a similar language shared by artists working in
the genre of traditional patterning.
Each
pair was created simultaneously from a single conceptual drawing. Buffington incorporated into each painting a
piece of cloth from the corresponding quilt.
With one exception, there was no discussion between painter and quilter
about the final outcome, but the pairs are eerily alike, suggesting a
close-knit, nonverbal communication. It
was as if the two artists were in the same studio, looking over each other's
shoulder as they worked.
Quilters
creating the 17 works in the exhibition include: Virgina Avery, Rita Barber, Marian Brockschmidt, Marily Doheny,
Caryl Bryer Fallert, Pat Holly, Sue Nichols, Roberta Horton, Libby Lehman,
Diana Leone, Carole Liebzeit, Mary Mashuta, Paula Nadelstern, Yvonne Porcella,
Judy Severson, Anita Shackelford, Ricky Tims and Jean Wells.
The
exhibit will be at the Brevard Museum of Art and Science, 1463 Highland Ave.,
Melbourne, FL, now through July 11. Hours
are 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesday thru Sat.
Sunday 1 to 5 PM.
Cost
is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, $2 for students and children under 12 are
free.
For
more information call the art museum at 321-242-0737.

CRUISE
ROOMATE NEEDED
I
signed up for your newsletter a few months ago. I plan to retire by the
end
of this year and spend at least 6 months in Fla. I love to quilt and
sew,
and look forward to the different shows and workshops. I contacted the
people
for the quilt cruise next Jan 8-16.
Since I am a widow I would be
traveling
alone. The lady informed me that at the
present she did not have
anyone
looking to double in a room.
I
wonder if you might know of someone, or a way I could contact your guilds
to
see if anyone was looking for someone to share a room with for the
cruise. The problem is that without a room mate the price
doubles from $789
to
$1590.
Thank
you.

CORNELL
MUSEUM TO PRESENT INTERNATIONAL QUILT EXHIBIT
DELRAY BEACH, FL The Cornell
Museum of Art & History at Old School Square Cultural Arts Center will present
Quilt National 03, the 13th biennial, international juried exhibition of
innovative, large format, contemporary quilts by artists from throughout the
world. Exhibit dates are June 3-Sept.
11, 2004. Museum summer hours are
Tuesday-Saturday, 10:30-4:30. Admission
is $6 adults; $4 seniors and students 14-21; free for children 13 and under.
The
exhibition is sponsored by the Dairy Barn Southeastern Ohio Cultural Arts
Center. Portions of the Quilt National collection,
which consists of 86 quilts, will be showing in galleries and museums
throughout the country through December 2005.
Jurors
Lix Axford, Wendy Huhn and Robert Shaw studied images of 1452 works by 676
artists from 23 countries. Their
careful deliberations yielded a composition in which the melody of dozens of
new voices blends perfectly with the sometimes-familiar (or often surprising)
creative voices of names that are familiar to Quilt National's ever-growing
audience.
Quilt National Project Director
Hilary Fletcher notes, Regardless of their preferences, everyone should find
that this collection of quilts includes examples of awe-inspiring
craftsmanship, of exciting or new design strategies, and images that speak to
their senses as well as their emotions.
Visitors will encounter some works that are vaguely reminiscent of
formats, materials and techniques that are the roots of what has evolved to be
a richly diverse art form. In other
works, they will see that the artists are clearly exploring new territory and
speaking through materials and techniques that grandmother never dreamed
of.
Following
an exhibition of quilts at New York's Whitney Museum in the early 1970's, people
began to recognize that the early quilts demonstrated their makers' mastery of
established principles of design and craftsmanship as a way of expressing their
personal experiences and views of the world.
The purpose of Quilt National is to showcase works that represent a
fresh and innovative approach to the medium.
A Quilt National exhibit demonstrates not only that the creativity and
artistry of the heritage quiltmakers is thriving but that the energy and excitement
generated by fiber art is equal to that in any other medium.
The
Dairy Barn Arts Center, at 8000 Dairy Lane, Athens, Ohio, 45701 is the only
place to see the entire collection of 86 quilts. For a sneak preview visit Dairy Barn's web site
(www.dairybarn.org).
The
Cornell Museum of Art and History, part of the Old School Square Cultural Arts
Center, is housed in the restored 1913 Delray Elementary building, dedicated in
March 1990 and named in honor of Delray residents Harriet W. and George D.
Cornell. The Cornell Museum is located
on the corner of Atlantic Avenue and Swinton Avenue in downtown Delray Beach
and is a member of the Delray Beach Cultural Alliance and the Florida
Association of Museums.
Old School Square is a National
Historic Site and Florida Cultural Institution also housing the Crest Theatre
(in the restored 1925 high school building), a restored 1926 gymnasium, and an
outdoor entertainment pavilion. In
addition to providing museum, theatre and arts education programs for adults
and children, the center serves as a venue for community, corporate, private
and media events. For information on
performances, exhibits, classes or rentals, call 561-243-7922 or visit
www.oldschool.org.

KIDS
QUILTING
During
April and May, 84 students in a disadvantaged middle school in Melbourne made
themselves quilts under the tutelage of volunteers from The Kids Quilt
Project. KQP is the focus of
EduQuilters Inc. in Brevard County. The quilts were all laid out on the gym
floor, each as a block in a giant quilt.
Students
sat alongside their quilts as the results were photographed! Florida Today
featured the project in the Spacecoast section of their paper on May 25. KQP is
partially funded by the National Quilt Association and Florida Cabin Fever
Quilters in Orlando. To learn more: www.eduquilters.org
For
their quilting project called "Hugs and Stitches," twelve high school
students won two first prizes and the opportunity to represent Florida at a
national convention of Future Community and Career Leaders of America in
July. The students are members of
Satellite Beach High School's organization of Future Community and Career
Leaders of America, which is overseen by Janet Gray, sewing teacher at the high
school. The girls selected fabrics,
produced the quilts, embroidered "Hugs and Stitches Critters" on
them, and presented them to an abuse shelter for children.
This
project was mentored by EduQuilters Inc. and was funded through a Brevard
County grant.
