Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #80
www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com
November 1, 2004
Quilting Friends,
Since you are a quilter and you already re-use and re-cycle
fabric, here’s a website with a great idea behind it: www.FreeCycle.org This organization helps to match up people with
items to offer for FREE with people who could use those items for FREE. Everything from used bicycles to computer
games to size medium jeans and everything in-between. When you go to the above website, they will direct you to the
website for your location.
In this newsletter, I have listed opportunities to donate
quilts and/or quilting supplies for Hurricane Victims, as well as to purchase
quilts to support Breast Cancer Research.
Here is another plea:
In the Punta Gorda and Port Charlotte area, four different
quilt guilds with 300-400 quilters have been left with very little after
Hurricane Charley. Go through your
quilting and sewing supplies for fabrics, notions, tools, books and patterns
you are not using and send whatever you can to:
Mary Anne Rhodes, 998 Mangrove Road, Venice, FL 34293
As always, if you think you’re missing out on a newsletter,
check the website for the latest updates: www.FloridaQuiltNetwork.com

QUILTS FOR HURRICANE VICTIMS
I am with the Associates of the Vietnam Veterans of America
- a Congressionally chartered veteran's not for profit organization.
We have been working within the state of Florida doing
hurricane relief since Charley went through.
The quilt shops in
the Tampa Bay area are helping us by having classes and making small children's
quilts, blankets, or tops and donating them to us for the kids. Some have also donated fabric for our other
ladies who are on fixed incomes to sew.
Can you please donate some fabric, QUILTS OF ANY SIZE,
BATTING OR CROCHETED OR KNITTED BLANKETS to help us meet our goal of 4000
blankets by the first of December? We are a not for profit group and all
donations will be tax deductable.
We are asking for these items all to be used for hurricane
kids for distribution in December.
We have well over 5000 families of low income and migrant
workers who have lost everything they owned. Christmas is a time for children
and for new hope for a better life ahead.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts - any help will be
gratefully appreciated.
Sincerely,
Joyce I Koprowski

CLASSES IN NEW SMYRNA BEACH
---November 6, 7
(Saturday & Sunday, 9:30 AM - 4:30 PM) Focus on
Fibers Weekend
Two professionals approach fiber from different directions.
Clover uses fabric as a canvas to paint and print on while Fort creates
3-dimentional sculptures with it.
Tuition: two days of workshops, $110 members/$125
nonmembers; one day workshop, $65 members/$75 nonmembers
---Jette Clover, Thermofaxing
Saturday only
An easy and inexpensive way to make screens with text and
images that can be used on fabrics and paper.
---Jette Clover, Bleach Discharge & Over-Dyeing
Sunday only
This is a method of designing on black and colored fabric by
partly removing color and over-dyeing by painting, printing and screening.
An award-winning fiber artist from the Netherlands, Clover
brings fresh viewpoints to the workshops she teaches. Author of several books and catalogues, her MA in art history is
reflected in her works and teachings. Clover will have a solo exhibition in
Spring 2005 in the Harris House Gallery.
---Jacquie Fort, Junkyard Collage
Saturday and Sunday
This collage class uses a 3-dimensional object as opposed to
a flat piece of paper. The main object can be anything: old wooden boxes,
driftwood, hub caps (with some kind of surface) old turned pieces of metal,
plastic dolls from thrift stores, etc.
A Florida Craftsman from Vero Beach, Fort is well known for
her wonderful weavings but now she reaches further into the world beyond fine
crafts. Her mixed media pieces have been widely exhibited and are found in
several museums and private collections throughout the US.
---November 4, 11, 18, December 2 (Thursdays, 10 AM - 1 PM)
Mary Schimpff Webb, Set Stone in Metal
Create a silver ring with a set stone. This is a beginner s
class which will involve moving from design to finished ring with a few tools
and very little expense.
Schimpff's work compares favorably with the best of mid-20th
century modernist jewelry. She cuts her own stones, assembling the shapes like
a sculptor, and juxtaposes the colors like an abstract expressionist
painter. Her work can be seen in Arts
on Douglas Gallery, 123 Douglas Street.
Tuition: $125 members/$150 nonmembers
---November 13 (Saturday, 10 AM - 4 PM) Exploring Paper
Two classes involved in the study of paper. Blended
Fibers is the creation and use of paper while Xerox Litho Printing
is the exploration of printing on paper.
Tuition: $65 members/$75 nonmembers
---Robert Beck, Xerox Litho Printing
Create prints on the etching press and explore the
possibilities of continuous tone printing by using Xerox copies of your
drawings and designs.
Robert Beck was educated at Rollins College and the Lyme
Academy of Fine Art, CT where he studied painting, drawing and printmaking. His
current studio is set up at UCF, Research Park, where he experiments with
traditional stone lithography, digital media and book arts.
---Joan Williams, Blended Fibers
Make paper in a kitchen blender using recycled junk mail,
scraps, fibers and plants. Use the paper to create art works.
Williams' artwork reflects her love of history of ancient
peoples, textiles and nature. She
exhibits, lectures, and teaches locally as she continues to explore different
directions using handspun yarns, textiles, handmade paper and found objects.
For more information about the programs and to register for
classes, email Mary McBride, mmcbride@atlanticcenterforthearts.org, phone
386-423-1753, or register online at www.atlanticcenterforthearts.org using the
donation button and entering the class title you want. Register early for classes with a $20
deposit, sizes are limited; classes with less than six participants will be
cancelled two weeks prior to first meeting.

BREAST CANCER RESEARCH FUND-RAISING
We are currently in the midst of an incredible opportunity
to raise money for The Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research.
Our readers, numerous quilt guilds, and quilt shops have responded to our plea
for help in turning 25,000 quilt blocks into more than 525 finished quilts. Now
it is time to visit www.ebay.com/apqqfc and help us turn quilts into dollars.
In the first two weeks, we've already raised more than $25,000-imagine what we
can do between now and December 31.
Although we have worked with both local and national media,
including coverage on 13 Meredith television stations across the nation, the
best form of publicity is word-of-mouth by quilters. So, tell all of your
friends, quilters or not, to visit www.ebay.com/apqqfc and bid on these
fabulous quilts. Each Monday, 40 new items will be put up for 10-day auctions.
So visit often and bid high!
I sincerely appreciate all of your help in making this the
success we know it can be.
