NATIONAL QUILT DAY ACTIVITIES
National Quilting Day (March 18) brought quilting to the forefront for Brevard County Schools' sewing teachers. Three professional quilt teachers and 16 additional volunteers carried out a day-long workshop on the basics of quiltmaking. Demonstrations and personal assistance offered the opportunity for each participant to select fabrics, learn rotary cutting and quilt sewing. Quilt tops were begun, and the teachers ended their day by taking home enough information and supplies to complete the quilt. The workshop was an effort by EduQuilters to enhance their Kids Quilt Project which takes quilting into the schools. A follow-on workshop is planned for May 20, when the teachers will return with their completed quilts. Additional topics will be covered along with hands-on projects such as label making and using fusibles. The workshop was funded by the Margaret Heins Foundation of Brevard County and sponsored by The Quilt Place in Rockledge and The Warm Company. Responses from the participants expressed delight at working with experienced, friendly quilters. The volunteers, members of EduQuilters and Seaside Piecemakers, worked long and hard and were the key to this successful endeavor. Most of the participants said they had found a new passion!

Considering Quilts 2006 at Atlantic Center at Harris House
Forty-seven global artists are featured at Atlantic Center for the Arts at the Harris House Gallery, 214 South Riverside Drive, New Smyrna Beach, in Considering Quilts 2006: Artists Explore the Quilt Form, a juried exhibition, held April 2 – May 13, 2006. There is an opening reception with several of the artists in attendance, from 4 – 7 PM on April 2, which is free and open to the public. A second reception will be on May 6, from 4 – 7 PM. Peggy Imbert, of New Smyrna Beach, is sponsoring the exhibition which is free and open to the pubic.
On April 20 at 7 PM, Lauren Austin will present the lecture Story Quilts in the Harris House Annex, 123 Douglas Street. Austin, ACA’s Community Artist-in-Residence, is an enchanting storyteller and quilter who brings with her the experience of working as a lawyer, participating in the Civil Rights struggle, personalizing African American history, and being a woman. In her discussion, she will share her quilts and stories and invite the audience to tell their stories.
The quilt exhibition ends with a lecture on May 12 at 7 PM, Dialogue between Art Quilts and Architecture by Valerie S. Goodwin. She is an architect and artist who began designing and making quilts in 1998. Her art incorporates architectural elements, such as building forms, city planning, and mapping, as inspiration. The pieces focus on the geometrical relationships, patterns and ordering principles found in architecture. An Associate Professor of Architecture at Florida A & M University's School of Architecture, she was educated at Yale University and Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Goodwin’s workshop Map Maker, Map Maker, Make me a Map! is May 13-14, 10 AM – 4 PM She says, “Our environment -- past and present -- can provide an endless source of inspiration and can be a fascinating way to tap creative energies.” Students taking this workshop will design and create a small map representing a familiar place using fabric, paint and thread. Tuition: $150 members, $200 nonmembers
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10 to 4 PM, and Saturdays from 10 to 2 PM.
