Florida Quilt Network - Newsletter #197

February 4, 2015
Quilting Friends,
Have you been to a quilting retreat lately? How does 24/7 sewing with your friends sound, with meals and cleaning taken care of? I am fortunate to attend two different retreats each year. Different flavors, but both so relaxing and fun.
As you may know, I often take my show on the road, delivering my Stashbuster Lecture and quilt workshops to various Florida guilds. I know I’ve met many of you in my travels.
Now I get to put the two together: I’ll be teaching at a 2-day retreat in Cedar Key in September. I’ve lived and traveled all over Florida, but have never been to Cedar Key, so there’s that. And what’s not to love? Quilting, beach, low-country boil, 2 days of sewing and learning some new techniques. I’ll also be doing as many demos as possible, because I have a lot to share. Click here for all the details.
On another note, have you heard that a brand new AQS Quilt Show will be coming to Daytona Beach in February 2016? Wow…we’ve hit the big time! I realize it won’t be the size of Paducah’s show, but give us time. Click here for more info.
And finally, from my favorite LOCAL North Florida quilt show:
Hello Quilt Guilds,
It is almost time to send out my packets for QuiltFest of Jacksonville for 2015. If you have a new address, P.O. Box number, or a new person to contact would you please e-mail me at: gram3@comcast.net Or call me at 904 771-1154.
Thank you,
Gay Montgomery, Publicity

JOAN SHAY LECTURE & WORKSHOP IN ORLANDO
Florida Cabin Fever Quilt Guild is excited to announce that Joan Shay will be our guest speaker on March 2 and workshop instructor on March 7. Joan Shay is an award winning quilter from Cape Cod, Mass. and now lives in Summerfield, FL. She has developed a new appliqué technique, Appli-bond©. If you want to create realistic 3-D flowers, birds and fish easily and simply, then this is the technique for you. Appli-bond© is the fusing of two pieces of fabric together and allows you to create dimension without turning any edges. Whether you are a beginning quilter or an expert in appliqué, her 3D Appli-bond© technique will allow you to add exciting realistic three-dimensional appliqué to your quilts.
In her class we will be creating a 3-D African Violet using the Appli-bond technique. The
African Violet combines 3 petals and is very realistic. All sewing levels welcome and no sewing machine needed! Basic needle turn applique is also taught. Kits will be available for only $25.00 and are highly recommended as they allow the student to complete more during class.
The lecture is Monday, March 2, 2015 at 6:30pm at the Marks Street Senior Recreation
Center in Orlando, FL (101 East Marks Street Orlando, FL 32803) Guests are always welcome.
The class will be Saturday, March 7, 2015 from 9am – 3pm at the BETA Center, 4860
Lake Underhill Rd, Orlando, FL. The fee for the class is $25.00 for members of FCFQG and $35.00 for non-members. To register for the class, please go to our website at
www.floridacabinfever.com to download and print the registration form and submit to Daphne Boyd with payment. If you have any questions, feel free to email Daphne at dsinkewiz@gmail.com. You can find the necessary supply list at this web address or on our website.

CAROLYN FRIEDLANDER LECTURE & WORKSHOPS
April 11 and 12, 2015
CAROLYN FRIEDLANDER Trunk Show and Workshops. Carolyn is a nationally-known quilt artist and teacher, pattern and fabric designer, and author of the book Savor Each Stitch: Studio Quilting with Mindful Design (Lucky Spools Media 2014). Carolyn has been selected as a judge for QuiltCon, the international conference and show of The Modern Quilt Guild, to be held in Austin, Texas in February 2015. Carolyn’s work combines a modern aesthetic that draws on her training as an architect with an appreciation of traditional construction methods such as hand-quilting and appliqué. More about Carolyn and examples of her work can be seen at her website, http://carolynfriedlander.com. Carolyn will present a trunk show of her work as part of the guild meeting on Saturday April 11, and will teach two workshops on Saturday and Sunday.
Carolyn’s Saturday afternoon workshop will be based on her pattern “Olive” which uses paper piecing and conventional piecing. The project is fat-quarter friendly and is do-able for those new to paper piecing and yet challenging and fun for all experience levels. See more about “Olive” at http://carolynfriedlander.com/products/patterns/olive%20wall%20quilt%20pattern.
Cost: $30 for members, $40 for non-members, plus cost of pattern.
The Sunday full-day class will be based on Carolyn’s pattern, “Stripes,” which is a jelly-roll friendly paper piecing design that is expandable from runner to bed-size. You’ll use 2 ½ inch strips of contrasting light and dark fabrics to create a fascinsating geometric design that can be either bold or subtle depending on your fabric choices. See more about “Stripes” at http://carolynfriedlander.com/products/patterns/stripes-quilt-pattern.
